What is the double consciousness?

A racial survival strategy; a nonwhite way of thinking about the self through two pairs of eyes--one belonging to White American, the other belonging to racial or ethnic group; central component to nonwhite identity development

Asian men and black women. Undesired by their own race, but prefer their own race

What does double rejection mean and who experiences it?

Being rejected by society for race and sex or gender identity. Black gay men, black women

What race and gender is least likely to be married? Why?

Black women; b/c 1. more black men are in prison= less candidates for marriage, 2. black women take marriage very seriously, won't marry unless they know it will last

What is the different between Frazier and Moynihan?

Both blame black family issues on the black matriarchal family structure. Frazier traces it back to slave times, Moynihan keeps in more in present times.

What is the Moynihan Report?

Claims that black female-headed households (single moms) are to blame for racial inequalities/"disease"; problems cause by "tightening tangle of pathology"

What are antimiscegenation laws?

Criminalized interracial marriage and sex, outlawed in 1967 after Loving v Virginia supreme court case.

When did interracial marriage fall to lowest point in US history?

During Jim Crow segregation

What race and gender is the most likely to be married?

Hispanic women, especially Mexican-American

Explain cultural capital/racial work.

Interracial relationships require each person to engage a fair amount of time into studying the history and culture of their partners race.

What is interaction order?

It is the face-to-face domain of social life; the interactions between two or more people and the performances that occur (verbal and nonverbal communication)

Explain the discrepancy between blacks and whites in their racial identity formation.

It often happens much later for whites than nonwhites and can provoke feelings of guilt and shame due to racial privilege. Formation for nonwhites comes earlier and their race can become definition of self (why is can be painful when recognized for other race); nonwhites more likely to consider suicide

Explain the family government and the differing roles of men and women.

Patriarchal structure; recipe for male domination. Men= business & politics; Women= child rearing & houseworld (double/second shift)

Why might black marriages be twice as likely to end in divorce than those of Mexican Americans or whites?

Reasons: blacks are disproportionately incarcerated and impoverished, spatial dissimilarity, and psychological strain of racial domination

What is the sexual division of labor?

Says that certain jobs are classified as female and others are male. Structures family life so that women take on "second shift" of housework and child care.

What is racial authenticity?

Seeks to define a race by including or excluding behaviors from the repertoire that constitutes a group's aesthetics identity; can be tied to history through nationalism, ethnic fraud, cultural guidelines

What is new black nativism?

The entry fee into the field of blackness is descent, not simply from slaves, but from African slaves

What is the front stage/back stage idea?

The front stage is where we try to impress an impression on others. The back door is where we relax and don't have to impress others

What is the feminization of poverty?

The population of single mothers in poverty is increasing; must choose between working and sending kids to child care (pricey) or staying at home and living on welfare
