Born in Texas, he lived in NYC before moving to LA and penning a song about one the U.S.'s most famous zip codes. Recently, he and partner Kylie Jenner welcomed their first child.
HIEROGLYPHICS
Founded by Del the Funky Homosapien in the early 1990s, this collective also has members from the group Souls of Mischief. The collective's most recent release The Kitchen was released in 2013.

Frequently credited as the founder of Desi Hip Hop, in class we listened to this Punjabi rapper and his collaboration "Car Nachdi" with Bollywood artist Gippy Grewal.
VINCE STAPLES
From North Long Beach, California, this rapper was once associated with the Odd Future collective. In class we listened to his song "Norf, Norf."
DUMBFOUNDEAD
From the Koreatown neighborhood of Los Angeles, this rapper has been affiliated with Project Blowed. In class we listened to his song "Safe" which draws attention to race, ethnicity, and how there is little to no representation by men of Asian descent at the academy Awards.
KILLER MIKE
He is one of the members of the duo Run the Jewels but his career dates back more than 20 years as part of the Atlanta, GA collective the Dungeon Family.
DR DRE
He is one of the most influential producers and the rap industry since the 1990s. He is also from the West Coast (Compton, CA) and an original member of NWA.
KAMAIYAH
Her breakout album from 2017 is called Don't Ever Get It Twisted. In class we listened to this Oakland woman's song "How Does it Feel."
E-40
His real name is Earl Stevens and a founder of the rap group The Click. In class we listened to his song "Captain Save a Hoe."
J DILLA
His sound began in the underground Detroit scene during the mid 1990s and he was a member of the group Slum Village before his death in 2006. Some of his most notable work which has had one of the biggest influences on hip hop, ever, included production for A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu, The Roots, The Pharcyde, and Common.

In 2010 this Bay Area artist began to gain national attention after opening for artists such as Lil' Wayne and Snoop Dogg. His most recent album release is The Beautiful and the Damned from late 2017 with the song "Him and I" with Halsey.

One of the most famous rappers from South Africa, some of his biggest songs include "I Have a Dream," "Heartbeat," and "Kimberley."

Over the years, this artist has adopted numerous personas, alter egos, and used multiple accents, costumes, and wigs to portray different characters and styles in her music. One of her most critical verses is from Kanye West's "Monster."

Raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina, this rapper was born in Germany and was the first artist signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation label.
1 LIFE 2 LIVE
Starting in the mid 1990s, this LA trio dubbed itself the "Red, Black, and Blue." The group disbanded around 2005 but we are left with 2 albums from their work together - Bow Down (1996), and Terrorist Threats (2003).
BEAST COAST
The ___________ movement from the early 2010s based out of Brooklyn, NY was made of four primary groups - Flatbush Zombies, Phony Ppl, Pro Era, and The Underachievers.
TOO SHORT
The content of this Oakland rapper's material is heavily influenced by the 1972 movie The Mack and people like Fillmore Slim and Iceberg Slim. In class we listened to his songs "Cusswords" and "The Ghetto."

This Atlanta production team (Rico Wade, Ray Murray, and Sleepy Brown) is responsible for producing much of the music for the duo Outkast and putting Southern Hip Hop on the map in the early to mid 1990s.

This Canadian rap duo regularly includes religious themes related to Islam and their faith in their music. In class we listened to "Muslim Man."
CHANCE THE RAPPER
This Chicago rapper and noted philanthropist started gaining national recognition after his album Acid Rap, in 2013. His album Coloring Book from 2016 won three Grammy awards.
NONAME
This Chicago woman started gaining national recognition with her appearance on Chance the Rapper's album Acid Rap. Her only solo album up to this point is Telefone, released in 2016.
DJ QUIK
This Compton rapper, producer, and frequent user of the "talkbox" has worked with a number of artists but many of his albums feature close associates Suga Free, 2nd II None, Problem, Mausberg, El Debarge, and AMG. He has also produced for Dr. Dre, Janet Jackson, JayZ, Ludacris, and Whitney Houston, and more. In class we listened to "Jus Lyke Compton."
MHD (MOHAMMED SYLA)
This French rapper laid the foundation for a style known in France as "Afro Trap," a mixture of trap beats and African music.
FLYING LOTUS
This LA artist raps under the name Captain Murphy, has produced for Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, and is associated with the musician Thundercat. In class we listened to "Gone Fishin'" featuring Jeremiah Jae.
CLIPPPING.
This LA based trio is headed by Daveed Diggs and uses various experimental sounds and production techniques in their music. In class we listened to the mixed-meter "Story 2."
ODD FUTURE
This LA collective, sometimes abbreviated to OFWGK†∆, was started by Tyler, the Creator, Hodgy, Left Brain, Casey Veggies, The Super 3, and Jasper Dolphin. In class we heard from members Earl Sweatshirt and Frank Ocean.
HOPSIN
This LA rapper's style sometimes includes aspects of horrorcore and he is known to use white colored contact lenses during his videos and performances. In class we listened to one of the installments from his "Ill Mind" series.
MODENINE
This Nigerian rapper is one of the most respected MCs in his country and in Africa. One of his most notable collaborations is with Jamaican-American rapper anibus titled "Super Human."
BAHAMADIA
This Philadelphia artist released her first album Kollage in 1996 and has appeared with artists such as The Roots, Gang Starr, Talib Kweli, and Erykah Badu.
ANDRE NICKATINA
This San Francisco based rapper began his career performing under the name Dre Dog. Each year he holds a birthday bash party here in Santa Cruz at the Catalyst downtown. In class we listened to his song "Smoke Dope and Rap."
BROCKHAMPTON
This Supergroup formed in San Marcos, Texas, is headed by Kevin Abstract and is currently based in South Central, Los Angeles where some of the videos for their Saturation Trilogy were filmed.
GRM DAILY
This UK artist is well known in the Grime Hip Hop scene which is popular there. In class we listened to his song "Grime Daily."
FRANK OCEAN
This artist doesn't always allude to his sexuality in his lyrics, however, in class we listened to "Chanel," a song that makes a subtle, yet, clear reference to bisexuality.
WYNNE
This artist from Lake Oswego, Oregon has gone viral on social media outlets multiple times. One her more politically laced songs from last year is titled "An Open Letter to Donald Trump."
ANGEL HAZE
This artist identifies as pansexual and agender. Her song "Cleaning Out my Closet" recounts her experiences of sexual assault and abuse as a child.
CHINO XL
This artist is known for his undeniable and sometimes over-the-top skill, wordplay, and technique. He is also a member of Mensa, the high IQ club. In class we listened to his song "Wordsmith."
KENDRICK LAMAR
This artist represents the power of street credibility and at the same time, popularity, mass appeal, technical ability, and artistry. Many same he is the best in the game right now. He's has been around a while as a soloist and as a member of the Black Hippy Collective but only in the past 10 years or so has become a household name. His most recent work is curating and producing the soundtrack to the movie Black Panther.

This artist's song "Wut," in many ways, sounds similar to Macklemore's "Thrift Shop" (which was released after "Wut"), but the artist was never given any credit for the sample.
LIVING LEGENDS
This collective with members from Oakland and Los Angeles has been making music since the mid 1990s. Their most recent release in 2012 featuring their 8 core members was "Trojan Horse." In class we listened to "Never Fallin'" and "Moving at the Speed of Life."

This duo, composed of Kurupt and Daz Dillinger, made their first appearance on Dr. Dre's 1992 album The Chronic.
CALLE 13
This group from Puerto Rico is known for commentary in their songs about the Latin American community and culture. In class we listened to their songs "Latinoamerica" and "Pa'l Norte."
DEEP DICKOLLECTIVE
This group was founded around 2000 in the Bay Area and was a regular performing group at the PeaceOUT World Homo Hop festival - a festival which one of the groups co-founders, Juba Kalamba, helped start.
CYPRESS HILL
This group was the first Latinx group to have platinum and multi-platinum albums in the early 1990s. In class we listened to one of their most popular songs "Insane in the Brain."
THE ALKOHOLIKS
This hardcore trio formed in the early to mid 1990s. After a brief hiatus from 2006-2011, Tash, J-Ro, and DJ E-Swift have had a resurgence with their devoted fan base which has been patiently waiting for their collaboration LikNuts with The Beatnuts from NYC. Until then, we'll have to be happy with "Grumpy crocodile."
CONSCIOUS DAUGHTERS
This hip hop duo consists of Carla "CMG" Green and Karryl "Special One" Smith and released their first studio album Ear to the Street in 1993. In class we listened to their single "Somethin' to Ride to (Fonky Expedition)."

This man is considered by many as one of the founding fathers of reggaeton and the Father of Rap in Spanish. His first studio album Underground was released in 1985.

This multi-talented and multi-faceted artist's real name is Donald Glover, and one of his best known works is "Redbone" from late 2016.

This producer is considered to be one of the greatest of all time and at the beginning of his career was half of the duo Gang Starr.

This production team duo from Virgina Beach , VA is composed of Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams and at one point both men were part of a collaborative group with producer Timbabland and rapper Magoo.

This rapper and trans woman from Texas has been featured on a series of battle rap contests.

This rapper and woman from Oakland released her debut mixtape A Good Night in the Ghetto in 2016. In class we listened to her song "How does it Feel?"

This rapper from Indonesia taught himself English from YouTube videos and began making Vine videos regularly a few years ago. In class we listened to his song "Dat $tick" which was remixed after its viral success and features Ghostface Killah from the Wu Tang Clan.

This rapper of Afro-Puerto Rican decent from New York City challenges gender, body image, and beauty ideals with her song "Tomboy."
Mac Dre
This rapper recorded an entire album over the phone while incarcerated in the mid 1990s. In class we listened to his songs "The Thizzle Dance" and "Young Black Brotha."

This rapper who is also a lesbian and from Brooklyn, NY regularly includes themes and topics related to her sexuality in her music. In class we listened to her song "Oooouuu".

This rapper, producer, film maker, and actor has produced most of material for the collaborative work of the Wu Tang Clan.
RHYMESAYERS
This record label based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota includes artists such as Aesop Rock, the duo Atmosphere, Brother Ali, Dilated Peoples, I Self Divine, and the Micranots.

This record label was founded in 2005 by Lil Wayne and features some highly recognized and popular performers which have included Drake, Nicki Minaj, Chrisina Milian, and DJ Khaled.

This rock group from Mexico City has sung and rapped their politically charged and socially conscious lyrics since the mid 1990s. In class we listened to their song "Gimme the Power."

This trio from Long Beach, CA features three of the most famous West Coast rap / R & B artists ever. Their only album called The Hard Way was released in 2004 and their group name is derived from the one of the three original telephone area codes for Los Angeles in 1947.

This woman is in the trio Digable Planets, which is known for their fusion of jazz samples, conscious lyrics / message, and Afro-centric themes.
KAROL CONKA
This woman is one of the most prominent rappers in Brazil today. Her style blends hip hop and various types of music from Brazil. In class we listened to her song "Boa Noite."
HONEY C
This woman of Cambodian heritage was born in Canada and toured with Tyga in the early 2010s. Some of her notable tunes include "Gwola" and "Can't Sit With Us."
SNOW THA PRODUCT
This woman, originally from San Jose, was featured on the Hamilton mixtape's track "Immigrants (We Get the Job Done)."

We listened to the song "Blend" in class which features ________, a rapper who is gay, and ___________, a singer, performer and trans woman. The montage at the beginning of the song highlights important recent events, such as political victories by transgender candidates and recent trends in violence against the transgender community.

While the song "LGBT+" by this artist provides a show of support and solidarity for the LGBT+ community, one could possibly interpret the lyrics and imagery as a hyper-sexualized caricature of gay culture.
