As an unproctored, unsecured assessment I may use any of the other listed ancillaries, although it is suggested I research and study to acquire the answers and not just "Google" the answers because this is information I need to know for secured assessments.

How should I request a due date extension for a graded assignment that I missed?

Because you will drop the 5 Chapter Quizzes with the lowest "top score", your lowest 2 Discussion Forum scores, and your lowest Review Quiz score, and because you have extra credit available to you, no extensions will be given.

Competency 2: The student will analyze the impact of human activities on the systems that support life on Earth by:

Describing why human population growth is a fundamental environmental issue. Identifying human consumption patterns that affect environmental sustainability and the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Explaining that the misuse of soil reduces soil fertility, pollutes streams, and requires expensive remediation, and how to prevent this. Listing the various kinds of water use and describing problems associated with each. Describing challenges associated with managing terrestrial and oceanic resources. Describing local challenges to managing urban impact in South Florida. Summarizing the cause and effect of atmospheric problems. Examining the issue of global climate change from economic, climatological, social, political, cultural, and agronomic perspectives.

Module 1: Humans in the Environment (Chaps 1, 2, 7 & 24) Module 2: The World We Live In (Chaps 3, 4, 5 & 6) Module 3: A Crowded World (Chaps 8, 9, 18 & 23) Module 4: The Search for Energy (Chaps 10, 11, 12 & 15) Module 5: Our Precious Resources (Chaps 13, 14, 16 & 17) Module 6: Environmental Concerns (Chaps 19, 20, 21 & 22)

Each Module contains four (4) chapters (as list above). For purposes of learning the information from each chapter it is suggested you read each chapter, review the Power Point presentations, and review the study guides all the while compiling a set of notes for your reference. Graded assessments for each module include Chapter Quizzes, Discussion Forums, and a secured Review Quiz (using Respondus Monitor).

A grade of Incomplete (1) will be awarded to any student who misses the date of the "last day to drop with a grade of W" and submits a written request for the I within one week.

I'll drop your lowest 5 chapter scores; quizzes not taken count as zeroes. For this reason, Quiz extensions will not be given. Chapter Quiz grades are combined with the Discussion Forum grades that are part of your Participation Grade equal to 25% of your Grade Average for a letter grade.

The 24 Chapter Quizzes are due on Monday nights (when due) by 11:59pm.

Competency 1: The student will demonstrate knowledge of how the principal systems that support and/or affect life on Earth operate by:

Listing the basic physical, chemical, and biological factors involved in key environmental systems. Describing the process of natural selection as it operates to refine the fit between organism, habitat, and niche. Identifying the structure of an ecosystem and describing why sustained life on Earth is a characteristic of ecosystems. Describing how each major component of Earth's global system (atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere) is involved and linked with biogeochemical cycles (e.g. the carbon cycle, nitrogen cycle, oxygen cycle, phosphorus cycle, and water cycle). Charting the flow of energy in ecosystems.

You will take Review Quizzes using Respondus Monitor. What does this mean?

Respondus Monitor uses the secure browser, Repondus Lockdown Browser, and records me while taking the Review Quiz using a connected internet camera and microphone.

The Mid Term and Final Exam are proctored. Therefore, you must come to an MDC Campus (or other pre-approved site or use a pre-approved secure testing techology such as ProctorU) to complete these exams.

You should set aside at least 30 minutes for each chapter quiz or you'll be rushing and score poorly. Don't wait until the last minute to take the quiz; you may run out of time and extensions will not be given. You have 30 minutes maximum for each of 3 attempts / chapter. You should use your textbook and/or notes to help you to answer the questions. Once each quiz is due, you will have seven days to review it, then the quiz will be unavailable to you. The higher score from your 3 attempts on each chapter will go into your gradebook as that chapter's "top score".
