Treaty of Kanghwa
1876, Japan attacked Korea, forced Korea to open trade and gave benefits of Japan. China was upset.
Sino-Japanese War
1894-1895. Japan sent 200,000 troops to Manchuria and Korea after China supported the Tongkak Rebellion in Korea. Japan defeated China and spread deeper.
Anglo-Japanese Alliance
1902, military alliance between Japan and Britain to protect each other from Russia. Represented respect for Japan bu world's most powerful nation.
Russo-Japanese War
1904-1905. Russia kept troops in Manchuria to defend railroad from Japan and Boxer Rebellion. Britain and Japan felt threatened. February 1904, Japan attacked.
Japan annexes Korea
1910, Korea became part of the Japanese empire.
Battle of Mukden
250,000 Japanese defeated 320,000 Russians.
Privy Council
A group of intermediaries between the Diet and the Emperor.
1873 Conscription
Aritomo initiated a mass conscription of man over 20 to serve 3 years in the military.
Japan's Offensive in Russo-Japanese War
Attacked Port Arthur and declared war on the Eastern Russian Fleet.
Aggression towards China
China was underdeveloped with lots of land. Japan wished to conquer China and Korea for economy and land.
Meiji Constitution
During Meiji Restoration, Emperor was divine and united people of Japan under a common authority.
Ultranationalism
Grew in Japan, similar to Fascism, youth were taught of Japan's glory in school. Never annexed by US or European nation.
Japanese Racism
Grew intense as ultranationalism blossomed. Japanese hated Chinese.
Treaty of Shimonoseki
Japan cemented control of Korea, Taiwan, and the Liaodong Peninsula in Manchuria. China paid $170 million in reparations.
German Colonies
Japan received Germany's colonies in East Asia after WWI including the Shantung Peninsula. US feared Japanese occupation of this region.
League of Nations
Japan was a founding member in 1919 at the Paris Peace Conference.
Yamagata Aritomo
Led development of Japan's modern military. Believed in Social Darwinism. Strong eat the weak. Japan needed overseas colonies to thrive.
Admiral Togo
Led the Japanese navy to defeat the entire 43 ship Russian Balkan Fleet.
Minister of Education
Made education compulsory. Increased literacy rates. Curriculum directed to promote nationalism.
Diet
New Parliament in Japan under Meiji. Emperor still had final say on government matters.
