What is Electricity?

Ace your homework & exams now with Quizwiz!

Energy station

change different types of energy into electric energy.

Electric charge

is a property of a particle that affects how it behaves around other particles.

Battery

is a source of electric current, which provide the energy that causes the electrons to flow.

Power strips

it is possible to plug many devices into a single wall outlet.

Static electricity

the buildup of electric charge on an object.

Electric current

the flow of electric charges along a path.

Electrostatic discharge

the jumping of electrons from one object to another.

Buzzer

A device to convert electricity to sound.

Atoms

are the building blocks of all matter

Open circuit

a broken path along which electric charges cannot flow.

Conductor

a material that readily allows electric charges to pass through, it carries electric charges and lets heat or electricity travel through it easily. Ex. metals, some liquids, wires

Insulator

a material that resists the flow of electric charges, it does not let heat or electricity move through it easily, it is used to cover the electric plugs and wires. EX. electricity worker clothing, rubber, plastic

Closed circuit

a path along which electric charges can flow with a complete loop no breaks in its path.

Circuit

a path along which electric charges can flow,

Filament

a tiny wire made of a material that glows when current runs through it.

Series circuit

an electric circuit in which the electric charges have only one path to follow.

Parallel circuit

an electric circuit that has more than one path for the electric charges to follow.

Bulb

an electric energy transformed into light energy.

Fuses and circuit breakers

are switches added to each circuit that work automatically, opens if charge flows too quickly through a circuit to stop the flow so the wires cool, which prevents a fire. opens when the electric current is greater than its certain value.

Switch

controls the flow of charges by opening and closing the circuit.

circuit breaker panel

each breaker allow a certain number of amps of electric current to pass through one circuit.

Circuit overload

occurs when too many devices in a circuit are turned on.

amperes, or amps

the unit for measuring electrical current.
