Airport Signs and Markings

Taxiway Location Sign

Indicates the taxiway you are currently located on. Yellow text on a black background.

Runway Holding Position

Identified by four yellow lines, two solid and two dashed. The solid two lines are located on the taxiway side. Must receive a clearance from ATC before entering the runway. This marks the runway and taxiway intersecting.

Nonmovement Area Boundary Marking

Identified by two yellow lines, one solid and one dashed. The parking side or nonmovement side is on the solid line side. To taxi past the boundary, you must call ATC and receive a taxi clearance.

Instrument Landing System (ILS) Critical Area

Identifies an area where an airplane could interfere with ILS radio signals. Sign has white characters, outlined in black, on a red background. Also has pavement markings. Hold short here when instructed by ATC.

Runway Holding Position Sign Intersection

If the taxiway intersects with the runway somewhere other than the threshold, both runway numbers will be shown when approaching. The runway number will be on the side of that runway threshold. 15-33 indicates R15 is to the left and R33 is to the right.

Runway Distance Remaining Signs

Indicates how many feet of landing runway remain (in thousands of feet). Has white numerals on a black background.

Runway Holding Position Sign

Located to the left of the hold short line. Identifies the runway you are approaching. The sign has white characters outlined in black on a red background.

Taxiway Direction Sign

Location of a nearby taxiway. Black text on a yellow background with an arrow directing to the taxiway.

Displaced Threshold Chart Supplement

Marked on the diagram by two ovals on either side of the runway. The distance is noted in the chart supplement.

Instrument Landing System (ILS) Critical Area Taxiway Markings

Pavement markings for ILS hold short area. Yellow ladder extending across the runway.

Approach Area Holding Position Sign (APCH)

Protected area for airplanes on final approach to a runway. Also has yellow hold short line on pavement. You are only expected to hold short here if instructed by ATC.

Displaced Threshold

Where a runway may start further than the runway pavement. Identified by white arrows in the center, leading up to a 10-foot-wide white threshold bar marking the beginning of the runway. Usually located at an airport with an obstruction in close proximity to the edge of the runway pavement. The area behind this marking can be used for takeoffs but not landings.

Enhanced Centerline

Yellow dashes on the side of the centerline up to 150' prior to the hold short line.
