What court case is this? New Hampshire legislature tried to change Dartmouth private College into a state university. Legislature changed schools charter by transferring power from the trustees to the governor. Trustees sued William Woodward a supporter and former secretary treasurer of the university for his unlawful recovery of the charter. The trustees won. Court decided state can't violate charter or contract by a private institution.

After returning to Missouri he sued courts unsucessfully. Supreme Court ruled no African American was considered a us citizen therefore cannot sue. Missouri compromise ruled unconstitutional.

He didn't receive a lawyer and was found guilty in court. Filed a habeus corpus petition arguing it violated his right to be represented in court. Court decided he did have the right to be represented even though he was a felony defendant.
