When creating a weighted scoring model, how do you identify criteria important to the project selection process? Give two examples of possible criteria for a project.
Identifying criteria that are important to a project depends upon the project and the input of the stakeholders. Two examples of criteria include cost (a dollar amount for the project, including purchasing and implementation) and time (the length of time involved in completing the project from start to finish).
In what ways do general management knowledge and skills fit into the job description of a project manager?
One of the most important skills of a project manager (as stated in the AHIMA Webinar) is the ability to motivate people to get a task done, even when they don't work directly for you. PMs have to have the ability and skills required to motivate others. The PM can't do all of the work herself.
Describe how problems, opportunities, and directives can drive the project selection process.
Problems are probably the most common driver of the project selection process. A problem occurs (e.g., an emergency situation with no established protocols) and as a result, management determines that a project should be implemented to rectify the problem (establishing emergency protocols and procedures). Opportunities drive the project selection process when an employee recognizes room for growth. Perhaps they have a friend who would make a good employee, but there is no corporate employee referral program in place. This provides an opportunity for a project. Directives drive project selection because they are required. A CMS directive to implement a new procedure will require a hospital or other healthcare organization to develop a project so as to remain in compliance.
____________________ are the people involved in or affected by project activities and include sponsor, project team, support staff, customers, users, suppliers, and even opponents to the project.

Why is it important to have standards or guidelines for performing project management functions?
Standards are descriptions of best practices for completing projects. Standards enable PMs and team members to have a general idea of what expectations are for project planning, execution and completion. Although different fields have different requirements (e.g., auto industry vs healthcare) and project scope can vary widely (e.g., small hardware implementation in one office vs. systemwide EHR rollout) the standards of project management for each are the same.
