step 1.) select a space large enough for ypur vehicle on your side of the road. check mirros before stopping, and signal to alert other drivers. pull up alongside the vehicle in front of the space, leaving about 2 feet between the other vehicle and yours

tip

backing up a vehicle takes practice. vision is typically limited and extreme caution must be used at all times. it is difficult to see directly behind the car, even usig mirrors and glancing back. be careful backing up!

1.) turn your head to look over your right shoulder and check through the backseat rear-window for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists, and other vehicle that may be a hazard

avoid backing up corners bc its very dangerous. a vehicle can come around the curve and run into the back end of your vehicle.

find parking spaces that don't require backing

if possible find a parking space that doesn't require for you to back out of when you want to leave. look for parallel parking spaces.

tips

if you must take a sharp turn while backing up use your left hand as the main steering hand to turn the steering wheel. then just as you would when driving forward, use your hand over hand movements all the while your body is positioned sideways and your head is turned towards the right rear.

speed control

keep your foot on the brake pedal, when you see that its clear to back up release your brake pedal slightly, while still keeping some tension on the brake, this is so you move very slowly with control of the vehicle. continue this motion until absolutely sure that you're safe to continue the backing of the vehicle. once you are in the roadway start moving a little quicker, so you get out of the way of any oncoming traffic.

make sure your wheels are straight. back up to the vehicle behind you. turn your wheels away from the curb.

once you have completed making the sharp turn, straighten your steering wheel to the angle of the roadway OR intended area that you're backing to. always proceed at very slow speeds

use mirros and passengers to help navigate. when your movement is constricted always use mirrors and your passengers help to see any hazards

once in vehicle

watch behind your vehicle as you are backing up. look in your rear view mirror, your side view mirrors, and then while you're backing up turn over your shoulder so you are positioned to see directly behind your vehicle.

sharp turns

when backing up around a sharp corner place your left hand on the top of the steering wheel and look out the nacm window. in addition, glance at your side view mirrors to make sure you're close to the curb.

whenever possible avoid backing

you canmt usually help but back up out of driveways and parking spaces. however there are areas that you can eliminate backing up such as when you pass a street you wanted to turn onto, instead of backing up go around the block or turn around in a safe location

head position while steering

you should have your head turned towards the right rear of your vehicle. therefore you can see any objects to the right side and behind your vehicle.

body position while steering

your body should be positioned to the right, with your arm over the passenger seat. when you're ready to back up you will be prepared to see and have a clear view behind your vehicld. finally, with your foot on the brake, or brake and clutch, slowly proceed backwards.

backing speed

your speed while backing up should be at a snails pacd. there could be children, pedestrians, vehicles, etc. be prepared to stop in less than a second. once you are on the roadway and you see your path for backing up is completely clead, you can move quicker so you don't get hit by any oncomig traffic.
