The PEL limit for a chemical was 15 ppm for 2 hours and 5 ppm for 6 hours. Calculate the TWA.

(2 hours x 15 ppm) + (6 hours x 5 ppm) = 60 hr*ppm 60 hr*ppm / 8 hr (working day) = 7.5 ppm

What are the following exposure limits? 1. PEL 2. TLV 3. TWA 4. STEL 5. Ceiling limit

1. PEL - permissible exposure limit - primarily inhalation based - OSHA mandated limits 2. TLV - Threshold limit value - ACGIH - not regulated by OSHA. 3. TWA - Time weighted average 4. STEL - Short-time exposure limit - usually 15 minutes 5. Ceiling limit - never to be exceeded

29 CFR 1910.1200 Identify the title, part, & subpart.

29 CFR 1910.1200 Title = 29 Part = 1910 Subpart = 1200

What is the difference between acute and chronic exposure?

Acute exposure - high dose over a short period of time ~ usually 72 hours. Chronic exposure - low dose over a long period of time ~ years/decades.

What is the difference between MSDS & SDS sheets?

MSDS sheets were updated to SDS sheets in 2015 to align with the globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).

What does NFPA stand for? Now look at the NFPA diamond. What is the hazard scale? What do the following colors represent? Red Blue Yellow White

NFPA - National Fire Protection Association Hazard scale: 0-4 0 = no hazard 4 = highest hazard Red - Flammability Blue -Health Yellow - reactivity White - special information

When must the percentages of hazardous and carcinogen chemicals be listed on an SDS sheet?

Non-carcinogenic hazardous chemical - 1% or greater Carcinogens - 0.1% or greater

Define specific gravity or relative density.

Specific gravity/relative density is a ratio of densities: density of compound/density of water.

Define auto-ignition point. What is the difference b/w auto-ignition point & flash point?

The auto-ignition point is the minimum temperature at which a chemical will ignite without a spark. The flash point is the minimum temperature at which enough vapor is generated in an open container to support combustion in the presence of a source of ignition.

How many sections are there in the SDS and how many of these sections are non-mandatory? What are these non-mandatory sections of the SDS sheets?

There are 16 sections in SDS sheets and 4 of these sections are non-mandatory. Non-mandatory sections: 1. Ecological information 2. Disposal considerations 3. Transport information 4. Regulatory information

Define vapor density. What is the density of air and how can you determine whether a gas is heavier or lighter than air?

Vapor density - if gas particles are lighter or heavier than air. The molar mass of air is 29 g/mol. You can determine if a gas is lighter or heavier than air by comparing the molar mass of the gas to the molar mass of air. If the molar mass of the gas is greater than 29 g/mol, then the gas is heavier. If it is less than 29 g/mol, then the gas is lighter.

Define vapor pressure - find better definition

is the pressure exerted in a confined space by the vapor above its own liquid

What is the formula for converting ppm to mg/m^3?

ppm x molar mass/molar volume molar volume = 24.5 L/mol

What is the auto-ignition point for cooking/vegetable oils?

~500 °C
