Zygote
1st stage of development; fertilized egg; takes 2 weeks; travels down Fallopian Tube and attaches itself to thickened lining of uterus
Embryo
2nd stage of development; developing baby from about the 3rd-8th weeks of pregnancy; grows rapidly
Umbilical Cord
4th important change of pregnancy; food and oxygen carried to baby through it
Ovum
A female cell or egg; released by one of a woman's ovaries monthly
Sperm
Male cell that fertilizes ovum
Fetus
Name for the unborn baby from about 8th or 9th week of pregnancy until birth; 3rd and last stage of pregnancy
Prenatal Development
Physical changes that take place before a baby is born
Amniotic Fluid
Protects the developing baby; cushions the embryo from any bumps or falls that the mother might have
Uterus
The organ in a woman's body in which a baby develops during pregnancy; takes 2-3 days; egg moves through Fallopian Tube to the uterus
Placenta
Tissue that develops 3rd during pregnancy; very rich in blood vessels
Conception
When the ovum and sperm unite
