REM

20% of sleep; dream sleep, body is paralyzed, eyes move

Night terrors; characterized by extreme terror and a temporary inability to regain full consciousness; no memory of the episode

Central Apnea

failure of respiratory drive, when the brain temporarily stops sending signals to the respiratory muscles that control breathing

Non-REM

non dream sleep, has 4 sleep stages

Obstructive Apnea

repetitive pharyngeal collapse during sleep, which leads to absence of breathing; causes person to awake gasping for breath

Somnambulism

sleep-walking; function at very low level of arousal with no memory of the event; usually occurs in children

Restless Leg Syndrome

urge to move legs, uncomfortable sensation, worse during rest and at night, relieved by movement

Narcolepsy

Periods of exteme drowsiness for about 15 minutes every 3 to 4 hours; symptoms include hallucinations, inability to move

Enuresis

bed-wetting; occurs when a child is difficult to arouse; usually outgrown

Dysomnias

disorders of initiating and maintaining sleep and disorders of excessive sleepiness

Insomnia

inability to fall or stay asleep; may be associated with drug or alcohol abuse, pain, depression, obesity and aging

Sleep Apnea

lack of breathing during sleep; produces low 02 saturation, hypertension, ploycythemia, cyanosis, edema, and right sided heart failure.
