3 parts-foreground, middleground, background

Blind contour drawing

a drawing exercise, where an artist draws the contour of an object without looking at the paper

Still-life

a painting or drawing of an arrangement of objects, typically including fruit and flowers and objects contrasting with these in texture, such as bowls and glassware. Subject matter includes inanimate objects.

soft pastels

also called chalk pastels. an art medium that comes in stick form and is made of pure pigment, chalk and a binder. best used by building up multiple, thin layers of color. very good for blending

oil pastels

an art medium that comes in stick form and is made from pigment, wax and oil. will not crumble like soft pastels and are harder to smudge. they are best used in layers and blend well, while maintaining bright, vibrant colors. create an oil paint effect.

oil pastels rule of three

any area that you put color down, use three different shades within the same color family

sighting/measuring 2

close one eye to flatten the subject

observational drawing

drawing while looking at the subject. Ex: still-life

Sighting/ measuring 1

extend arm fully towards the subject with pencil in hand

Contour lines

lines that define the edges of objects

Tips to drawing a still life 1

make sure there is a direct light source, start drawing the outline of objects that are along the edges first, check line angles and measurements with your pencil, work from the outisde then more inwards, close one eye to flatten image, look back and forth as often as possible, erase when you see something inaccurate, shade from darkest to lightest, include a full range of values, take breaks then come back to see if adjustments need to be made

Sketching

quick drawings that can take as little as a few seconds to complete. they are not "finished" pieces of atrwork. they are used to record something the artist sees, to develop an idea for later use and to visually communicate ideas.

Comparative sizing/ measuring

the artist determines a dimension on their subject from which they compare all other dimensions. these comparisons then allow the artist to enlarge or reduce what they are seeing to fit into the final artwork. you just need to find the relative scale of any part of the figure to any other. allows an artist to maintain proportional accuracy.

contour line drawing

the artist only draws the lines that follow the visible edges of a shape as well as those along the important interior shapes

value

the lightness or darkness of a color. a successful drawing/painting will use a wide range of values

value scale

tool that an artist uses to make sure they have used a variety of values ranging from white to black, with several shades of gray in between

sighting/ measuring 3

use the top of the pencil to mark the top/side of what is being measured. use your thumb to mark the bottom/opposite side being measured.

shading

when creating values with pencil using the side of the pencil lead with side to side shading eliminated harsh lines. if you want to create visual texture, value can be created using hatching, crosshatching, scumbling and directional lines
