SmartStrip (Sustainability)

allows you to plug your computer into the "master" outlet and several other devices into the other slots on the strip. myCNM

Course Home Page (BlackBoard)

Clicking on the course link opens the Course Home Page (See Figure 14). Similar to the Windows Explorer interface, located on the left side of the course home page is a navigation pane with hyperlinks that will open new views in the view pane. For example, as the name implies, clicking on the Welcome link will take you to your courses' Welcome page. On the welcome page you will find welcome information for the course. After clicking on the link in the Navigation Pane you will see the related page in the View Pane. For example, clicking on the Learning Modules Link will show you the weekly learning modules and the associated folders that accompany that module. During the first few weeks of your term, more information about the links and features associated with CNM Learn will be presented to you by your IT Instructor.

Microsoft OneNote

Designed to function as an electronic version of a paper notebook, Microsoft OneNote is a note-taking and personal information management (PIM) application for collecting, organizing and sharing digital information. By storing text notes, photos, audio and video snippets, handwriting and similar content, Microsoft OneNote collects and organizes the information, making it available for searching as well as sharing with others.

Windows Media Center (Windows 10 app)

Designed to serve as a home-entertainment hub, to be viewed from a distance up to 3 meters (~10 feet) and controlled by specially designed remote controls. Enables users to browse and view pictures, videos, and music from local hard drives, optical drives, and network locations, along with viewing, recording and deferred-playing live TV. Features an interactive TV guide with scheduled recording capabilities. Can also be used for visualization of other information (like sports scores) within the interface.

Monitoring and ongoing management of network drives

Develop and follow processes and procedures - Reinforce rules for managing folders by monitoring structure and naming conventions and correcting errors. - Review procedures to ensure they are adequate and used appropriately. - Use records authorities to assess how long records need to be kept and plan so they remain accessible and don't become technically obsolete. - Dispose of records by following the Archives Act 1983 and the Protective Security Policy Framework. - Review and update access and security controls to meet agency needs and protect sensitive information. Icons (Windows 10)

Icons are small pictures on the screen that represent programs or other features. You can launch these programs by double-clicking on the icon. Most programs will open in a "window" on the screen, hence the name Windows.

Microsoft Word

Information entered, edited, formatted, and saved electronically. Letters, memos, notices, fax cover sheets, envelopes for mailing or distribution. Newsletters, brochures and books. Presenting reports and proposals in written form by summarizing and formatting data using a table of contents, headings, font changes and pagination.

CNM Learn Home Page (BlackBoard)

Logging in will take you to the CNM Learn Home Page (See Figure 13). On the right side of the screen is a list of your current classes. Each class listed is a hyperlink that will take you to your course home page. Clicking on the hyperlink will allow access to your course home page. In the center of the CNM Learn home page is the Message Center. Messages sent to you from your Instructors or classmates will show up in the message center. Clicking on the course message hyperlink will take you to the message center of the course that the message was sent from. On the left side of the home page is the Announcements Center. Institutional announcements (from CNM), or course announcements will show up in the announcements section. Please be sure to check both the Message Center and Announcements Center every time you log in for any important updates.

Microsoft Access

Microsoft Access, often abbreviated "MS Access," is a popular database application for Windows. Access allows users to create custom databases that store information in an organized structure. The program also provides a visual interface for creating custom forms, tables, and SQL queries. Data can be entered into an Access database using either visual forms or a basic spreadsheet interface. The information stored within an Access database can be browsed, searched, and accessed from other programs, including Web services.

Microsoft Project

Microsoft Office Project, also referred to as Microsoft Project, is a suite of tools for more efficient project and portfolio management. Project is used in a variety of industries including construction, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, government, retail, financial services and health care. The main modules of Microsoft Project include project work and project teams, schedules and finances. Microsoft Project is designed to help users set realistic goals for project teams and customers by creating schedules, distributing resources and managing budgets.

Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook is a personal information manager from Microsoft, available as a part of the Microsoft Office suite. Although often used mainly as an email application, it also includes a calendar, task manager, contact manager, note taking, journal, and web browsing. Many corporations utilize Microsoft Outlook in conjunction with Microsoft and Microsoft SharePoint Server for employees to coordinate meetings, calendars and shared mailboxes and folders. A version of Microsoft Outlook for Windows Mobile devices, Outlook Mobile, enables users to synchronize their Outlook data to their smartphones.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint is a very useful presentation application. With a number of built-in backgrounds and themes, a speaker can build a classy presentation rather quickly. The application allows importing of pictures, sounds, and other multi-media files to make a very attention-getting presentation. Sales personnel often use PowerPoint to make pitches to prospective clients. With its simple and easy-to-use interface, PowerPoint can be employed to create just about any kind of presentation for any kind of audience.

Microsoft Publisher

Microsoft Publisher is an entry-level graphic design program included in some versions of Microsoft Office. It is considered ideal for small business because it is user friendly and does not demand prior knowledge about the application or graphic design in general. Publisher includes templates for many types of common business needs, such as business cards, brochures, address labels and calendars. Microsoft offers the options to directly mail the file, export it as another file type or upload it to the cloud and publish online.

File Explorer (Windows 10)

Microsoft Windows Explorer is a graphical file management utility for the Windows operating system (OS). Windows Explorer, which was introduced with Windows 95, was later renamed File Explorer. Each time that a computer user accesses a disk or opens a folder containing files, they are using the Windows/File Explorer utility. The goal of the file management utility is to allow users to conveniently work with the files and directories located on any connected disk. When a file is selected within the Windows/File Explorer interface, users can select from a variety of context-sensitive actions such as renaming, moving, copying, publishing, emailing, printing or deleting the file. Entire folders can also be opened, explored, shared, copied, cut, pasted, moved or deleted. Files can be searched or dragged and dropped between folders, and folders can be moved into other folders and disk drives as desired.

QuickBooks Accounting

QuickBooks is Intuit Inc.'s set of software solutions designed to manage payroll, inventory, sales and other needs of a small business. The software's features include marketing tools, merchant services, product and supplies, training solutions. Each solution is developed according to different industries and their needs. Intuit's products for construction contractors include the Simple Start Plus Pack, QuickBooks Pro, QuickBooks Premier Contractor and QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions: Contractor. These products are designed to meet contractor's needs based on company size. These software solutions are used to monitor expenses, create invoices and reports, track change orders and job status, and manage inventory, customers, vendors and employees. In addition to these industry specific packages and their corresponding capabilities, Intuit offers add-ons to QuickBooks versions as well as third-party tools that integrate with QuickBooks in order to enhance current functions.

Microsoft Excel

Store and retrieve numerical data in grid format of columns and rows. Entering, calculating, analyzing company data such as sales figures, sales taxes or commissions. Tools for calculating trends, deciphering profits, creating numerical formats and visual data. Store text-based data such as client lists, employee data and mailing lists. Create the supporting data for a written report by selecting a particular range of data by date, department or personnel. For example, monthly sales reports can be created according to customer, manufacturer, sales person or product using Excel's data sorting and selection capability which is based on previously defining data by attributes such as department name, manufacturer or acquisition date. Examples of company reports might include financial summaries, compliance documents or personnel reports outlining vacation and sick days. Research in "what-if" scenarios. Illustrate comparisons among pricing structures, the cost of doing business in different markets or locations or the cost of producing next year's holiday products through different manufacturers. Can store and calculate the data as directed using existing or new data. Build great charts, use conditional formatting, help identify trends, bring data together.

Search (Windows 10)

The Cortana Search Box is one of the most convenient ways to find things on your computer. The exact location of the items doesn't matter—the search box will scour your programs and all of the folders in your personal folder (which includes Documents, Pictures, Music, Desktop, and other common locations). It will also search your e-mail messages, saved instant messages, appointments, and contacts. To use the search box, click on the Search Button and start typing a keyword or search term. You don't need to click inside the box first. As you type, the search results appear above the search box as Best Match. Click any search result to open it. A program, file, or folder will appear as a search result if: Any word in its title matches or begins with your search term. Any text in the actual contents of the file—such as the text in a word-processing document—matches or begins with your search term. Any word in a property of the file, such as the author, matches or begins with your search term.

Registration (myCNM)

The Registration Tab allows a student to access: Registration Links, Registration Tools, Academic Advisement, Academic Profile, Registration Information, Transfer Information, and New Student Orientation.

Start Button (Windows 10)

The Start Button, the Windows icon on the bottom left of the taskbar, is a launching point for access to most of Window 10's features, software programs, and your documents. Click on the Start Button to reveal a Start Menu that includes: File Explorer, Settings, Power options, and All apps. The Start menu offers a list of choices that allow you to open programs or navigate your computer by accessing your computer's programs, folders, and settings (See Figure 5). You can use the Start menu to do these common activities: Start programs (apps) Open commonly used folders Search for files, folders, and programs Adjust computer settings Get help with Windows Turn off the computer Log off from Windows or switch to a different user account

Print Screen

The Windows 10 operating system contains a feature called 'Print Screen". The print screen feature allows the user to take a snapshot, or picture, of their desktop. When the user activates print screen, anything that appears on the desktop will be saved to the clipboard (a memory location unseen by the user) which can then be pasted into a Word document. How to take a Print Screen and Save to a Word Document 1. On the keyboard, press the Print Screen (PrtScr) key (usually in the upper right on the keyboard). 2. Click on the search box and type in Word 3. Double-click Word 2016 to open Word 4. Click on Blank Document to open a new document 5. On the Home tab in the Clipboard group, click Paste 6. The Print Screen will appear in the Word document

Notification Area (Windows 10)

The notification area is located on the taskbar, in the bottom right corner of the screen. The notification area contains icons for programs that are currently running in the background. Typically, the user does not interact with these programs. At CNM, you will not be interacting with the programs located in the notification area. If you are unsure about what a program does, move the mouse pointer over its icon or name. A box appears that contains a description of the program. For example, hovering the mouse pointer over the Date and Time displays today's date and the day of the week.

Welcome (myCNM)

The site opens with the Welcome Tab Active. From the Welcome tab, a student can access: General CNM Announcements, Distance Learning Information, Contact CNM (Office and Staff Directories), Campus Maps, the Security and Safety Department, Dates and Calendars, Parking Services, Upcoming Events, and Academic Calendar Events

Settings (Windows 10)

You'll use the Settings app to change the most important settings on your computer, like your network and display options. To open the app, click the Start menu, then select Settings. You can also use the Control Panel to adjust your settings, just like in earlier versions of Windows. However, there are some options that can only be accessed from the Settings app, like adding a new user. Because of this, you'll probably use the Settings app more often. From the Start Menu, click on Settings to display the setting options (See Figure 10).
