What is impasto?
Impasto is a painting technique where paint is laid on an area of a surface in very thick layers, usually thick enough for brush strokes or painting knife strokes to be visible. With this technique, paint can also be mixed right on the canvas. Once the paint is dry, the purpose of impasto is to provide texture; so the paint appears like it's coming out of the canvas.
