Branches of the Autonomic Nervous System
PSNS
Bronchoconstriction
SNS
Bronchodilation
PSNS
Decreases (indirect effect only) metabolic rate.
PSNS
Decreases heart rate contraction.
SNS
Increases heart rate and force of contraction.
SNS
Increases metabolic rate.
SNS
Inhibits digestive and urinary functions.
Parasympathetic Nervous System (PSNS)
Main function is to control the bodies response which at rest (Rest and recovery role) which promotes functions associated with digestion, defecation, and urine production. The cell bodies of the neurons are located in the cranial nerve nuclei, and the sacral portion of the spinal cord. Neurotransmitter is acetylcholine.
Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS)
Main function is to control the body's response during a perceived threat (fight or flight). The cell bodies of the neurons are located in the lumbar and thoracic regions of the spinal cord. Neurotransmitters are norephinehrine, epinephrine, and acetylcholine.
PSNS
Pupil constriction.
SNS
Pupil dilation.
PSNS
Stimulates digestive and urinary functions.
PSNS
Vasoconstriction (indirect effect only) of blood vessels to the skeletal muscle.
SNS
Vasoconstriction of blood vessels to abdominal organs and skin.
PSNS
Vasodilation of blood vessels to abdominal organs and skin.
SNS
Vasodilation of blood vessels to skeletal muscle.
