Ch. 43 Venipuncture Equipment & Order of Draw
Tube Holders
Clears, plastic disposable cylinder with a small threaded opening at one end needle insertion and wide opening at the other end for tube exchange
Safety feature
Device that covers needle immediately after use to prevent injury and protect against blood bourse pathogen transmission
Gauge
Diameter or size of the needle opening
Lumen
Internal, hollow space of a needle
Topic Anesthetics
Local anesthetic that prevents nerves from transmitting painful impulses. Primarily utilized with pediatric patients. EMLA(Eutectic Mixture of Local Anesthetic)-mixture of lidocaine and primo ain't ointment/cream
22G Black
Multi-sample needle used for Venipuncture; common in practice when very few tubes are required or children
Needle Types
Multi-sample needles: Used with ETS & most common type of needles used for Venipuncture Butterfly needles(winged-infusion set): Used with ETS or syringe system. Primarily used for small, fragile, veins, hand veins, difficult veins or veins of elderly and pediatric patients since the tubing allowing for more flexibility and precision Hypodermic needles: Used for syringe system. Sometimes used for small, difficult veins that have a tendency to collapse
OSHA Regulations
Needles WITHOUT safety features MUST be used with tube holders of syringes that have safety features
25G Dark blue
Rarely used for pediatric veins because of high risk of hemolysis
Tourniquet
Restricts blood flow to distend/inflate veins Types: Vinyl(latex free) strap Blood Pressure cuff (maintain cuff pressure below 40mmHg or below patient's diastolic pressure? Velcro strap
Rubber sheath
Retractable sheath covering the needle that punctures tubes to prevent blood from leaking between tube exchange
23G Light blue
Routine butterfly needle used for small, fragile, hand or difficult veins
21G Green
Routine/most common multi-sample needle used for Venipuncture. LARGEST
Size of Gauge
Size and condition of the vein determines needle gauge used on a patient (commonly used needles in phlebotomy: 21G-23G) The lower the number (#) the higher the gauge, diameter of the bevel size
Bevel
Slanted tip of a needle; must always face up
Evacuated Tubes
Tubes with vacuum used to collect blood
Blood Collection Equipment Evacuated Tube System (ETS) Equipment
Vacuum that aid in blood collection
