chapter 6: "Education What Makes a Teacher Effective"
attitudes of effective teachers
"a persons predispositions to act in a positive or negative way toward people, ideas, events, and are a fundamental dimension of his or her personality." can be changed
classroom management skills
"a process- a set of activities-by which the teacher established and maintains those classrooms conditions that facilitates effective and efficient instruction." This is a skill that relies on theoretical knowledge, research and practical experience.
3 components contribute to teachers content knowledge
1.) discipline content (subject matter) 2.) curriculum content 3.) pedagogical (strategy) content knowledge
academic engaged time
A student spends being successfully engaged with academically relevant activities or materials. Effective teachers spend more time on task. they limit distractions, manage behaviors and are organized enough to waste little time.
The teachers attitudes toward colleagues, adults, and pupils' parents
Call someone in right away to protect yourself. If the parent gets in your face, take it like a man. Then ask, what can I help you with?
theoretical knowledge of an effective teacher
Educational theories and theoretical knowledge must continue to be studied. Theories form a base of information for teachers to use when interpreting new situations and solving issues.
Domain 3: Instruction
Effective teachers communicate clearly, use appropriate questioning, engage students in learning, provide feedback, and demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness
Domain 2: The Classroom Environment
Effective teachers create an environment of respect and rapport with students. Teachers manage behaviors, procedures, and effectively organize the physical space.
questioning skills
Effective teachers know how to ask questions that encourage students to use higher level thinking skills and analyze their thoughts. They understand "wait time" and give students adequate amount of time to process questions and bring their thoughts together.
Domain 4: professional responsibilities
Effective teachers reflect on teaching maintain accurate records, communicate with families contribute to the school and district, grow professionally, etc.
planning skills
Effective teachers thoroughly plan their lessons, but are able to make adjustments as needed. teachers often follow 4 basic types of planning-yearly, unit, weekly, and daily. All are important!
authority/collaboration
Refers to how the teacher interprets authority. Does the teacher feel comfortable asserting his/her opinions? When teachers collaborate with authority they see themselves as partners and feel less anxiety and resentment.
teachers expectations must be high
Students can perceive a teachers expectations and will respond either positively or negatively. A student may serve as a self-fulfilling prophecy and behave in a predictive manner in response to the teachers attitude.
The teachers attitudes toward the subject matter
Teachers must be enthusiastic about their subject matter. Students will know if your bored!
competition/cooperation
Teachers must cooperate and share ideas for the benefit of staff and students.
curriculum content
Teachers must know the schools curriculum and standards in their subject matter.
discipline content
Teachers need to fully understand their subject matter, so they can analyze and convey their elements in different ways for all students to understand. Multiple ways to teach.
superiority and prejudice/acceptance
Teachers who feel superior to other faculty members, parents, or students often do not show patience and respect. Effective teachers show attitudes of acceptance.
pedagogical content knowledge
The effective teacher bridges an understanding of subject matter and teacher strategies to find the most appropriate way of presenting the material. Teachers use examples, analogies, illustrations, explanations, appropriate to their curriculum, to convey their message.
Domain 1: Planning and Preparation
To be effective teachers, must demonstrate knowledge, strategies, must know their students, need to know how to set goals, be aware of resources, design coherent instruction, assess students' progress, etc.
4 major categories that effects teachers behavior
a.) Teacher attitude toward self b.) Teachers attitude towards children and the relationship between self and children c.) Teachers attitude toward colleagues, adults, and pupils' parents d.) Teachers attitude toward subject-matter
Aspects of reflective decision making
a.) attitudes that foster learning and human relationships b.) Knowledge of subject matter c.) Theoretical knowledge about learning and human behavior d.) skills that promote student learning
"theories in use"
are often theories that are not examined that all people use in their day to day decision making. Teachers must be willing to examine and possibly question their "theories in use" (The Scientific Method).
Knowing vs. doing
teachers must be able to apply knowledge and skills not simply be aware of things. Skills that are essential to effective teaching are: 1.) Asking different questions, each requiring different types of thought process from the student. 2.) Provide effective feedback 3.) Planning instruction and student learning activities. 4.) diagnosing student needs and learning challenges 5.) varied learning content to keep students engaged 6.) be observant of the classroom environment 7.) use technology to enhance students learning 8.) be observant of students grades and learning 9.) different instruction based on students different learning skills because everyone learns differently. 10.) integrating students' culture to make learning fun, relevant, and effective for the individuals
teachers attitude towards children and the relationship between self and children
teachers need to recognize and confront their attitudes toward their students and make a conscience effort to treat all students fairly.
teachers attitude toward self
teachers needs to deal with their emotions and anxieties to be able to understand and empathize with their students' needs
