Drive Imaging

A Disk image, in computing, is a computer file containing the contents and structure of a disk volume or of an entire data storage device, such as a hard disk drive, tape drive, floppy disk, optical disc or USB flash drive.

Clean Install

A clean install is a software installation in which any previous version is eradicated. The alternative to a clean install is an upgrade, in which elements of a previous version remain.

Device Driver

A device driver is a program that controls a particular type of device that is attached to your computer. There are device drivers for printers, displays, CD-ROM readers, diskette drives, and so on. When you buy an operating system, many device drivers are built into the product.

Disc Image

A disk image is a copy of the entire contents of a storage device, such as a hard drive, DVD, or CD. The disk image represents the content exactly as it is on the original storage device, including both data and structure information.

Dual Boot

A dual boot system is a computer system in which two operating systems are installed on the same hard drive, allowing either operating system to be loaded and given control. When you turn the computer on, a boot manager program displays a menu, allowing you to choose the operating system you wish to use.

File System

A filesystem is the methods and data structures that an operating system uses to keep track of files on a disk or partition; that is, the way the files are organized on the disk. The word is also used to refer to a partition or disk that is used to store the files or the type of the filesystem.

Device Manager

Device Manager is a Control Panel applet in Microsoft Windows operating systems. It allows users to view and control the hardware attached to the computer. When a piece of hardware is not working, the offending hardware is highlighted for the user to deal with. The list of hardware can be sorted by various criteria.

ISO Image

ISO image is a term commonly associated with CD and DVD burning. An ISO image (or .ISO file) is a computer file that is an exact copy of an existing file system. An ISO can contain the entire contents of a CD-ROM disc or CD medium.

ISO File

In common use, an "ISO File" is a file that contains the complete image of a disc. Such files are often used when transferring CD/DVD images over the Internet. Depending on who you're talking to, "ISO File" may refer to all disc image files or only certain kinds.

Lite-touch/High Volume Deploying

MDT 2010 supports thin and thick imaging. Thin imaging refers to deploying a Windows image with little or no customization, and then automatically or manually installing applications, device drivers, and updates on each client computer.

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OME)

OEM (pronounced as separate letters) is short for original equipment manufacturer, which is a somewhat misleading term used to describe a company that has a special relationship with computer and IT producers. OEMs are manufacturers who resell another company's product under their own name and branding.

Product Activation

Product activation is the act of verifying protected electronic data and involves the required activation by the consumer shortly or directly after purchasing the software or service.

Recovery Partition

Recovery (D): is a special partition on the hard drive used to restore the system in the event of problem. Recovery (D:) drive can be seen in Windows Explorer as a usable drive, you should not attempt to store files in it.

Preboot eXecution Environment/pre-execution Environment (PXE)

Short for Pre-Boot Execution Environment. Pronounced pixie, PXE is one of the components of Intel's WfM specification. It allows a workstation to boot from a server on a network prior to booting the operating system on the local hard drive. ... PXE is a mandatory element of the WfM specification.

Master Boot Records (MBR)

The Master Boot Record (MBR) is the information in the first sector of any hard disk or diskette that identifies how and where an operating system is located so that it can be boot (loaded) into the computer's main storage or random access memory.

Third party software refers to programs that are developed by companies other than the company that developed the computer's operating system

Repair installation

To perform a clean installation of an OS, the hard disk is formatted and completely erased. To perform a clean installation of an application, the older version is uninstalled first. Installing the OS on a new computer or installing an application for the first time is automatically a clean installation.

Diskpart

diskpart is a command-line disk partitioning utility included in Windows 2000 and later, replacing its predecessor, fdisk. This utility prevents creating multipartition layout for removable media such as flash drives. It is also used for partitioning internal hard drives.
