Master gland

Oxytocin (OT)

Stimulates the contractions of the uterus during childbirth and stimulates the release of milk from the breast of lactating women(Women who breast-feed) In response to the suckling reflex of the infant

two distinct lobes of the pituitary gland

anterior pituitary gland and the posterior pituitary gland

posterior pituitary gland

develops from downnward projection of the base of the brain.

anterior pituitary gland

develops from upward projection of the pharynx in the embryo and is composed of regular endocrine tissue.

Pituitary Glands location

located beneath the brain in the pituitary fossa (depression) the sphenoid bone, which is behind and slightly above the nose throat.

posterior pituitary gland is also known as

neurohypophysis

Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)

promotes and maintains the normal growth and development of he thyroid gland and stimulates the secretions of the hormones thyroid hormones

Pituitary glands function

secretes hormones that control the functions of other glands.

Luteinizing hormone (LH)

stimulates female ovulation and the secretion testosterone (male sex hormone) in the male.

infundibulum.

the pituitary gland is connected to the hypothalamus of the brain by a stalklike projection

The posterior pituitary gland stores and releases the following hormones:

Antidiuretic hormone (ADH), Oxytocin (OT)

The anterior pituitary gland secretes the following hormones

Growth hormone (GH), Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), Lactogenic Hormone (LTH), Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), Luteinizing hormone (LH), Melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH)

Another name for anterior pituitary gland

adenohypophysis

Antidiuretic hormone (ADH),

also called vasopressin, decreases the excretion of large amounts of urine from the body by increasing the reabsorption of water by the renal tubules (Thus helping maintain the bodies water balance)

Lactogenic hormone (LTH),

also known as prolactin, promotes the development of breasts and stimulates breasts after delivery of the baby

Growth hormone (GH),

also known somatotropic hormone (STH), regulates the growth of bone, muscle, and body tissues.

Melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH)

controls the intensity of pigmentation in pigmented cells of the skin.

Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)

stimulates the normal growth an development of the adrenal cortex and the secretion of corticosteroids (prima cortisol, corticosterone, and aldosterone).

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)

stimulates the secretion of estrogen and the of eggs (ova) in the female ovaries; also stimulates production of sperm in the male testes.
