all parts of the essay need to center around a certain idea; doesn't need to be explicitly stated

argumentative essay that provides specific examples to prove a point

short definition: explains a word for clarity stipulative: provides a fuller explanation of a topic that is key to your essay extended: describing a word or concept in greater depth using multiple methods

dominant impression

the thesis of your description essay. it is your main idea of your essay, doesn't have to be explicitly stated. not just thesis, also attitude of writing letting the reader know how you feel abt the ideas/event you are describing (tone) dominant impression is what your entire description (your writing of your senses) impresses on the reader (what you want them to understand)

purpose of description essay

to describe something in meticulous detail in order to fulfill all five senses so the reader can picture what is happening clearly in their head the purposes are to convey information without bias or emotion to convey it with feeling

to explain a pattern in a subject that may not have been noticed before

underlying reason, not apparent to the observer
