communication
process of interaction between people in which symbols are used to create, exchange, and interpret messages about ideas, emotions, and mind states
What always affects the communication process?
relationships
the process of sending a message
sender encodes the message ➡ message is transmitted➡ receiver decodes and interprets the message
What do studies of language acquisition show among infants and toddlers?
that they receive cues about meaning from facial expressions of their caregivers during verbal interactions
sentinel events
unusually serious, unexpected events that occur during episodes of care (ex) wrong site surgery, adverse drug events, patient falls, are not only a result of harm to the patient but also read to increase health care costs #1 cause is due to communication issues Lessened with standardized communication like SBAR
communication competence
- Communication is effective & appropriate - Clear, concrete, courteous, and complete. - Voice concerns and advocate - Evolves with experience
Types of communication
- Verbal - Non-Verbal - Symbolic - Meta-communication
exemplars of communication
-assertive communication -therapeutic communication -intra-personal communication (self-talk) -inter-personal communication -inter professional communication -hand-off/ reporting -documentation - EHR
interrelated concepts of communication
-collaboration -care coordination -safety -culture -health care quality
hand-off/Report
-nurses communicate with one another via end-of-shift or end-of-day report -this is the process of the nurse-to-nurse communication in which the patient data are shared between shifts and other points of transition, with the primary intent of ensuring accuracy and the continuity of care
intra-personal communication
-self talk -can be positive and helpful to the person -or it can be negative and self destructive
Symbolic Communication
Adds to what is understood by incorporating art and music to enhance meaning
therapeutic communication is defined as
Collaboration with patients to promote understanding relationships and participation, leading to positive healthcare outcomes.
Meta-communication
Factors that comprise the context of the message. Internal personal states (e.g., disturbances in mood) Experience / education Environmental stimuli related to the setting of the communication Contextual variables (e.g., the relationship between the people in the communication episode).
interpersonal communication
Verbal and non-verbal communication between people. Romantic, healthcare, family Connection with others.
Is silence considered a form of communication? Yes or No?
Yes. Silence is considered a form of communication in the sense that some messages may be eloquently expressed when one or more persons in the communication exchange choose to either withhold messages or to avoid the interaction
Process for Complementary Exchange
Between people Participants are senders or recievers (usually both) In the act of communication, the reception and transmission of messages between participants is dynamic, cyclic, reciprocal, and interactive, where dialogue serves to support the creation of shared meaning The sender encodes a message using symbols (both verbal and nonverbal) and transmits the created message to the receiver. As each transmission is completed, the receiver perceives the message, interprets the symbols, and then responds with another act of encoding and transmission of a response to the sender.
Sender and Receiver
One who encodes and one who decodes the message
