••The computer slideshow is the presenter's partner and should do what to your message?

enhance the communication of a message.

A free software can allow you to?

experiment with slideshows

•Notes Page view-

enables you to view the speaker notes in a page view

Why must Special effects be used in moderation?

, viewers must pay attention to the message, not the special effects.

•Slide sorter

- Shows any slides on one screen and is used for viewing and rearranging all slides

Storyboard

- a plan for the visuals of a presentation that forces a presenter to organize thoughts and assemble them into a coherent presentation.

Theme

- a predesigned combination of background colors, font style, size, and color in a slide presentation file.

slideshow

- a presentation supplemented by or based on a series of projected images or photographic slides.

Layers

- a slide is composed of three layers: Provides consistency

Progressive disclosure

- a slide presentation technique in which items are revealed one at a time until all the items on a slide display.

•Outline view

- a viewing mode in a presentation file that allows user to enter and edit information

•Speaker notes

- allows editing. Helps speaker remember information for a given slide . Speaker notes- only the slide is visible to the audience, but the speaker can print notes associated with the slides. It is the place to store talking points that you want to mention, when you give your presentation. - a feature in slide presentation software that can help a speaker remember information for a given slide; when the slideshow is projected, only the slide is visible to the audience, but the speaker can print notes associated with the slides.

Why are many fonts not suitable for text in a presentation slides?

- can elicit emotional responses.

Accessibility

- design of a resources that allows individuals with disabilities to access the resource; the resource design should allow for screen reader for persons with limited eyesight as well as those with hearing impairment.

Color

- draw attention for and has emotional appeal. Use sharp contrast in colors assists color blind viewers to read the text. Check color scheme- computers renders colors differently.

Lessig style

- fast pace, content not detailed. Uses text visual with few words. Presenter uses 15 seconds on each style

Prezi

- online presentation software that uses zooming to navigate images on a single canvas. Free version, users may have motion sickness

Embedding polling

- presentations with embedded questions using polling software

When selecting fonts

- select one that is visually appealing and elicits emotional response from the audience. (See Figure 6-1 for different fonts. )

PechaKucha

- slides are usually images instead of text fast-paced presentation, 20 slides visible for 20 seconds

slideshow view

- the slide that audiences see in a slide presentation. Only for viewing, not editing

Slideshow view

- the view that audiences see in a slide presentation; only for viewing, not editing.

Video

- video clips, not more than 45- 60 seconds as it may distract the audience. Make a copy of the presentation without the video in case the video portion equipment fails on the day of the presentation.

Sound

- when recording narrations, write out the information you want to record first. Insert sound, pre-recorded.

Learning theory: three types of cognitive load theory

-Intrinsic -Extraneous -Germane

Intermediate presentation skills

-customize the presentation menu -create handouts -add clip art to slides

Basic Presentation Skills

-design a simple presentation -apply a template to the background -insert a new slide

Advanced presentation skills

-design on-screen navigation -customize presentation toolbars -embed/edit a spreadsheet

Flipped Classroom

-students complete learning activities (videos, interactive learning modules , etc.) in advance which allow learners to spend class time using engaged learning activities.

Traditional

-use slides as standard slide and bullet designs for other slides * Newer designs, reduces the viewer's cognitive load-

Slideshows are used to convey information in many settings. 2 model of slide presentation:

1. Lecture support model - or presentation supplement model guides the audience to follow oral presentation. Face to face and online synchronous class setting. 2. Lecture replacement model- a style presentation that requires text or narration to guide the audience viewer; because the tutorial replaces a lecture, the learning objectives must be explicit to the viewer and very detailed.

Computer Slide Models two Models

1. Lecture supported (Lecture Support Model) or presentation supplement model 2. •Lecture replacement ( Lecture replacement model)

Principles for all presentations

1.Every presentation must have a stated purpose- clearly stated contains additional details that address purpose , and ends with summary 2. Citations and references- to avoid plagiarism is included, when using materials from other sources 3. Chunk information in 5- to 10-minute segments- to prevent overload of learner on broad and complex topics. 4. Intersperse short slide presentation with critical thinking practice questions that include correct answers and rationales to assist the learner with new knowledge 5. Consider how your audience will view a visual and think about what the images will convey when planning a slideshow. Visual literacy of the viewer and the cognitive load that the presentation places on the viewer. 6. Slide design should have minimal text and appropriate visual images and facilitate learners to process information

What is PechaKucha style?

A fast-paced presentation style with 20-image slides shown for 20 seconds each.

What is Lessig style?

A fast-paced slide presentation style with minimal text.

What is outline view?

A mode for entering and editing information in a presentation.

What is a lecture support model?

A model that guides audiences through an oral presentation.

What is a storyboard?

A plan for the visuals of a presentation to organize thoughts.

What is a theme?

A predesigned combination of colors, fonts, and styles in a presentation.

Ability of the individual to understand and use the presentation ( find, interpret, evaluate, use and create images and visual media.

Where can I find the ACRL Visual Literacy Competency Standards?

Accessed from htpp://www.ala.org/acrl/standards/visualliteracy

What does ACRL stand for?

Association of Colleges and Research Libraries

What is the layout layer?

Builds on background layer with different placeholders.

What should be done before creating professional slides using features that slide presentation software makes available.

Create an outline or storyboard

What is intrinsic cognitive load?

Difficulty of problem solving or making sense.

What do slideshow software provide?

ways to use Images as part of the presentation.

•Background layer sometimes called the master layer in slide presentation software that holds the design of the slide, or the theme.

It is important because it keeps all the slides in the presentation consistent in looks. Works together as a whole .

What is a content layer?

Layer for entering text and objects in a slide.

What is cognitive load theory?

Limited short-term memory, unlimited long-term memory. -the brain has limited short-term memory and unlimited long-term memory; therefore, it is difficult for the brain to process reading words on a slide while listening to a presenter unless the two are congruent. -Intrinsic cognitive load -Extraneous cognitive load -Germane cognitive load

What is a background layer?

Master layer that holds the design/theme of a slide.

What is germane cognitive load?

Minimal text, appropriate visuals for processing.

What are speaker notes?

Notes associated with slides to help a speaker remember information.

What is Prezi?

Presentation software that uses zooming to navigate on a single canvas.

What is a gradient background?

Slide shaded from lighter to darker color.

•VIEWS of SLIDES:

Slideshow software allows you to look at your slides in many ways

Cognitive load theory

The brain has limited short term memory and unlimited long -term memory. Described by Sweller in 1988 in seminal work in learning. -It is difficult for the brain to process reading words on a slid while listening to presenter unless the two are congruent.

What is normal view?

The default creation mode in a slide presentation file.

What is slideshow view?

The view that audiences see in a slide presentation.

Why is visual literacy important in presentations?

To consider the level of visual literacy of the audience.

What does the crop function do?

Trims edges of a graphic.

What is the lecture replacement model?

Tutorial-style presentation replacing lecture.

What is extraneous cognitive load?

Unnecessary information in instruction design.

What is evidence-assertion order?

Visual evidence before assertion slide.

•Layout layer builds on

background layer and types of placeholders for different types of slides (theme).

What do Transitions presentation programs cause?

a slide to appear first at the center and then expand, and others cause the slide to sweep across the screen. Transitions can be dramatic, enhance the message or distract the audience. Use sparingly and be consistent.

The use of technology serves as a foundation for the design of

a variety of interactive instructional methods.

Poster presentations

are commonly required for education, research conferences in clinical settings, also in professional organization conferences.

Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED ) style uses

commanding images with or without few words to convey meaning. Each slides conveys image. Takes time to create high impact image. Examples at http://www.slideshare.net/

Slideshow software is designed for what?

creating presentations, usually bundled with other office suite software.

When creating the presentation, start right away with

creating slides.

Evidence- assertion order-

design replaces each slide title with a short sentence.

•The slideshow menu

includes many of the same feature as word processing menus: font style and size options and ability to create tables and insert graphics and multimedia . The implementation of specific slideshow features varies by software type and version.

Is The number of text available an advantage or disadvantage?

is both an advantage and disadvantage in the facet of presentation software.

Basics of Slide Creation: •Slideshow software

is similar in all application program that use a graphical user interface.

Computer slideshow

is used to supplement oral supplementation or stand-alone slideshows with voiceover or notes.

Why Plan before the first slide is created?

it will save much time and result in more organized presentation.

content layer

slide presentation layer use to enter text or other objects, such as images, tables, and chart

Lecture support model- also known as

the slide presentation model, can guide audiences to follow the oral presentation; the slides should help an audience keep track of ideas and illustrate points, but not include the entire talk.

What is the only reason for using images in presentations?

visual pertinent to your message. -to enhance the presentation.

Speaker notes-

when slideshow is projected, only the slide is visible to the audience. It can be printed with the associated slides. It can be used to recording narrations and rehearsing for the presentation.

Using Slideshows in Nursing

• to share knowledge and practice in nursing. • to enhance learning. • to outline talks, - to supplement oral presentations or stand- alone slideshows with voice- over notes.

normal

•- default creation mode in a slide presentation, allows editing

Storyboarding

•A visual plan. •Organize your thoughts and allows you to assemble your ideas into a coherent presentation. •Planning save time. Use the Slide Sorter as a whole- makes easy to rearrange slides. •Switch between the Slide Sorter and the Design view when working on the actual visuals.

Presentation Software •Commercial packages include features unavailable in free versions:

•Ability to narrate •Galleries of graphic samples •Ability to import and export presentations from other software programs •Allow custom handouts - can begin using free software to experiment with slideshow features and functions. •Inclusion of interactive help files that include videos and tutorials

special effects

•Color- limit screen colors to 4-6 • Sound- inserted into commercial slideshow software • Video- insert digital video from a file or website/ You Tube. Limit to 45- 60 seconds • Animation- Custom animation. Takes form of Progressive disclosure . Items are revealed one at a time until all the items on a slide display. • Transitions- the way the slide makes an entrance. •Speaker notes- helps speaker remember information in slide

Presentation Software •Compatibility and collaborating software design

•Compatibility and collaborating software design

•Is the following statement true or false? •The normal mode is the mode used to present the slide show.

•False • Rationale •The normal mode is the default mode used to create slides. •The slide show view is used for the presentation.

Compatibility of Software

•Most slideshow software is compatible with other slideshow software. > Slides developed with PowerPoint into Keynote for the Mac and Google Drive Presentation can be imported. > Added special effects ( sounds, transitions, and animations may not import. • Cloud computing office suites, such as Office Online, iCloud, and Google Drive, allow you to use applications with your favorite web browser on any computer device. •The cloud computing version of PowerPoint allows you to save files to One Drive, the Microsoft online file storage app, which is a component of the Microsoft Office Online.
