Certificate

A certificate is a series of courses designed to provide students with specialized knowledge that is less extensive than, and different from, a degree program. Certificates may consist of courses that are part of a major or courses that are created outside of a major.

Excess Credit Hour Surcharge

HIP (High Impact Practice)

A term that refers to learning practices that have been shown to be beneficial for college students from many backgrounds. It represents opportunities for hands-on learning experiences for undergraduate students, such as seminars or community engagement, that go beyond the classroom.

Minor

An optional complement to a bachelor's degree. A minor is a smaller group of courses in a secondary field of study outside of the academic major sufficient to establish proficiency in a discipline without having to take all of the courses that a major would take. Department courses used in the academic minor may not be applied to the academic major.

Concentration

An undergraduate concentration is a planned sequence of courses within the bachelor's degree program that may focus upon a particular area or field within the major or may be a combination of courses from different disciplines that provide an interdisciplinary focus of areas of special interest to students.

General Education

Courses that are required for all students, regardless of academic major. The general education courses consist of a broad curriculum that enable students to become critical thinkers, concerned citizens, successful professionals, and reflective learners.

Prerequisites

Major prerequisites are courses that prepare you for the program of study.

Foundation/Core

Specific courses related to the program of study.

Program Electives:

The additional courses offered by the college that enhance the major courses as enrichment to the general academic field of study.

Specialization

The specific required courses that provide the academic concentration and baccalaureate identification (less formal than a concentration)

Supporting or Related:

Those courses that are prerequisites to the specialization courses or that support specialized courses, providing preparation or breadth to the area of specialization. These courses are often referred to as college or program core courses.
