Matriarchy

a society in which female members have more social and political power than male members

Patriarchy

a society in which male members have more social and political power than female members.

Glass Escalator

a trend in which men seem to easily rise higher and higher in a company, as if on an escalator, while women stay at the bottom.

Glass Ceiling

a trend in which women can rise to a certain level of promotion in a company but are blocked from reaching the highest levels of management or supervision

Old-Fashioned Sexism

explicit and overt beliefs that men are superior to women in a variety of skills and tasks

Institutional Sexism

societal perpetuation of different opportunities or advantages for one sex over the other

Ambivalent Sexism

the belief that some women are good and pure, while other women are bad and deserve bad treatment

Hostile Sexism

the belief that women are whiny, sexual teases who enjoy controlling men

Benevolent Sexism

the belief that women have qualities of purity and morality that men lack and should be treated like princesses

Second Shift

the fact that both a man and woman go to their first job, or first shift, at the beginning of the day, but women are expected to complete more housework than men when they return home after work
