1) Add -1x to both sides : √2x-1 =x-8 2) Square both sides: 2x-1=(x-8)² 3) Factor the left side: 2x-1=x²-16x+64 4) Move everything from the right side to the left side by adding one and subtracting 2x: 0=x²-18x+65 5) Factor: 0=(x-13)(x-5) 6) Solve by adding 13 to 0=(x-13)and add 5 to 0=(x-5) Answers: x=13 and/or x=5
Solve algebraically: 2|3x+4|-10=12
1) Add 10 to both sides: 2|3x+4|=22 2) Divide 2 both sides: |3x+4|=11 3) Two solutions: 3x+4=11 and/or 3x+4=-11 4) Subtract 4 to both sides to the both equations: 3x=7 and/or 3x=-15 5) Divide 3 to both sides of the equations: x=7/3 and/or x=-5
