The supreme law of the land in the United States.

Virginia declaration of rights

drafted in 1776 to proclaim the inherent rights of men, including the right to reform or abolish "inadequate" government.

expresses the ideals on which the United States was founded and the reasons for separation from Great Britain and no longer be under british rule.

Washington's farewell address

Letter written by george washington near the end of his second term stating his leave. (published in 1796; also included a warning of long term alliances with other nations.

The bill of rights

Lists specific prohibitions on governmental power.

common sense

advocating independence from Great Britain to people in the Thirteen Colonies.

Kentucky and Virginia's resolutions

Argued that the federal government had no authority to exercise power not specifically delegated to it in the Constitution.

the original constitution of the US, ratified in 1781.
