Boom
A beam or spar pivoting at the foot of the mast of a derrick controlling the distance from the mast the load is being raised or lowered
Preventer
A line used to keep from the boom from suddenly swinging
Topping lift
A rope/cable that supports the weight of a boom or yard arm used to lift. Think the T boats boom system
Where should forks be when driving the forklift?
As low as possible, consistent with safe operations. About knee heightish
What is the counterbalance used for and where is it?
Back of the forklift, and stops it from tipping over with a load
What do you check in your pre-use inspection?
Basically see image, but I've also typed below Visual: Wheels, lug nuts, engine oil, transmission fluid, hydraulic tank, seat belt, forks/locking pins Start-up items: engine sound, gauges, lights, horn and beeper, direction/speed controls, brakes, steering
When should you check the forklift?
Before operating the truck
Pad eye
Flat metal plate with a projecting loop or ring, made all in one piece
Sling
Flexible strap usually used in the form of a loop to support or raise weight
Which way do you move a hand truck up and down a ramp?
Hands trucks always have the load downgrade
What is the purpose of shipboard maintenance?
Keeping the ship in ship shape shape; working and operating properly. Example: maintaining the lifeboat so it works when you need it

Stability triangle
Lines of stability from three base points, center of gravity must always stay within or the truck will fall over. As mast is raised the center of gravity is raised as well
Block and tackle
Mechanism of ropes and pulley blocks, used for lifting or pulling heavy objects
Shackle
Metal link, typically U shaped, closed by a bolt
Outboard
On, toward, or near the outside
Cross tree
Pair of horizontal struts attached to a sailing ships mast to spread the rigging, especially at the head of the top mast
Shroud
Permanently installed line/cable that leads from the mastheads to chain plates amidships to support the mast

Second section of square-rigged sailing ships mast
What need be aware of in/around the boat basin?
Situational awareness: people walking round, slips, trips, falls, not under crane/forklift The usual PPE

Stretched or pulled tight

To add grease to wire ripe, or similar idea
Know what is on the dataplate and what it is
Truck model and serial # Truck weight Capacity Fuel type Any attachments it has If nameplate is missing or illegible, don't operate the forklift
Two-block
Two blocks are locked together stopping the line. Don't do this, especially with the crane
Wire Clips
Used to make an eye in wire rope, U shaped with bolts
Which way do you drive the forklift down a ramp with a load on the forks?
When ascending or descending grades in excess of 10% with a loaded forklift drive with the load upgrade
What distance shall be maintained between the tires and the edge of a platform, dock, etc?
Width of one tire minimum, but a foot is a good answer

Within a ship, or on the inside dock side when talking about lines for mooring
