Manifestation of chronic untreated Jersey finger (3)

- inability to flex DIPJ - weak PIP - finger stiffness

Mallet finger Tx (2 groups, 2,2)

Conservative - analgesics - Mallet splint : 6-8 weeks Surgery - reconstruction of tendon - open reduction + internal fixation

Jersey finger treatment

Conservative - analgesics - splinting Surgery - tendon repair + bone / tendon stabilisation

Mallet finger - description - mechanism of injury

Injury of distal extensor tendon distal to DIPJ Mechanism - acute and sudden forceful flexion of extended digit ( e.g playing basketball ) - leading to rupture of extensor tendon / avulsion of tendon +/- small bony fragment

Jersey finger - description - mechanism of injury

Injury of flexor tendon at DIPJ of finger Mechanism - occurs in hyperextension of the tip of finger at the DIPJ while the proximal portion of finger is flexed

Mallet finger - Symptoms (1), more common in which finger - signs (3)

Symptoms - pain and swollen DIPJ ( usually in middle and ring finger) Signs - resting 45 degree flexed position of DIPJ - lack of active DIP extension - erythema and swelling

Jersey finger - symptoms (1) - signs (3)

Symptoms - pain and swollen over volar aspect of DIPJ and distal phalanx Sign - tenderness and swelling - inability to flex DIPJ while PIPJ holds in full extension - assess lateral stability : radial and ulnar stress test

Ix
