L: is this about... 'cause we're on a crazy budget, we're both teachers and our parents don't exactly-

J: i know. it's fine-

L: but i want you to come back with me. i want you there.

J: i love you. i adore you. but, i actually think i need to leave.

L: but-

J: i need to go home. i've - it's enough. i've had enough. enjoy your party. ok? i'll talk to you soon.

L: because, what, he's not a bridesmaid? seriously? i try to be a compassionate person, i really do, but you really test the limits.

J: i test the limits? you ****ing test the ****ing limits laura.

L: but you clearly don't want to be there, so i am telling you,you don't have to come.

J: i wouldn't miss you - that's not even an option

L: aer you upset about something?

J: i'm fine. really.

L: this is my bachelorette party. for my wedding. me. me, jordan. it's not annoy of our other- it's me. and... you have been completely unenthused.

J: i'm sorry. allow me to try and enthuse a little more.

L: and, except for you, everyone else i know gets that and is actually believe it or not HAPPY for me. you're the only who doesn't seem to get it

J: i'm the only one?

L: now youre gonna sit in judgement of my wedding?

J: if i was a woman, id be one of your bridesmaids. thats a fact. you can say what you want, but youre being so gender and you're like the least genders person i've ever known, but now you're getting married and its like there's this whole side of your personality i never, ever - i feel like i don't know you

L: what?

J: if i'm so important, why am i not standing up there next to you?

L: because i'm having a wedding?

J: kind of. yeah. i mean, why aren't you even having this wedding?

L: and you - what?

J: laura. just. don't go there.

L: that's why.

J: right

L: because i wanted to do something nice for her, she doesn't have any sisters -

J: the most important people are standing up there with you and -

L: and stand in front -

J: the third of three weekends -

L: we're keeping the bridal party small -

J: this whole wedding is like - this is not the wedding i thought you would have

L: we're not having kids in two years -

J: three years, five years - when you have children? it won't be possible to - you can't be the same kind of friend. you'll have a husband, children... i won't even come close. and i shouldn't. i wouldn't want to, t's just... your wedding is my funeral / i'm happy for you - i feel like such a ****ing selfish **** - because all i have ever wanted if for you to be happy - i just, i never thought i wouldn't be part of that happiness, somehow.

L: don't go where?

J: trust me. just don't go there.

L: but you are -

J: we haven't "been friends" for a while, and we're almost thirty so i kind of can't believe we're actually having a conversation about best friendship, but it is so totally unfair to still cal me your best friend when that is so clearly not the case.

L: he's my finance, he's gonna be my husband, things change when you have a-

J: we were best friends when we lived together or when we spent every weekend together, or when we talked multiple times every single day and we don't do that anymore, not even close. you wake up next to tony and you fall asleep next to tony and when your mom pisses you call tony. but i haven't found someone to replace you, and-

L: because that's what people do?

J: when did you become someone who does things because "that's what people do"?

L: how can you say that?

J: who's the first person you go to when you need someone?

L: why -

J: why aren't i a bridesmaid?

L: uh huh. yeah. you want to expand on that? you want to ****ing expand on that?

J: with pleasure. with mother****ing PLEASURE. let's start with tonight. exhibit A. the bachelorette party. which comes on the heels of the bridal shower, where we had to buy you pots and pans and cuisinarts and all this shit for a kitchen YOU WIL NEVER USE because YOU DON'T COOK........ which i guess is totally in keeping with the fact that this party is also a funeral for the laura we all used to know because now she's an entirely new person

L: then you go home and go to bed. what do you want me to say? / i want to go back to my bachelorette party now

J: yeah, ok.

L: AND STAND in front of all the people who matter to us and have them see that we're an us and then celebrate that with a big party

J: yeah. ok.

L: Uh huh. Uh huh. Uh huh.

J: you ****ing test the limits

L: yeah jordan. you're the only one. and i - im sorry, but i can't believe that you're making me justify this to you, that on what is supposed to be the happiest time in my LIFE, the one person i thought was my greatest ally, my biggest cheerleader, my partner, HE'S the one who's gonna be like this, he's the one who's going to come to my bridal shower and sit there GLOWERING at me, which i pretended not to noticed but of course i ****ing noticed, and he's going to come to my bachelorette party..

....

.. and throw a little pity party for himself in the middle of -

J: a pity party?

L: i am having a wedding because i want to bring my world together with his for a night and stand -

J: a weekend, not a night, a weekend -

L: i didn't replace you-

J: all the things you got from our friendship, you get from tony now. which is great. but all the things i got, things i really need - i'm not getting them from anyone, and then you tell me i'm your best friend but it's so different, it's so, so different ad i feel so alone, laura...

L: youre doing a reading

J: and i know for a fact i'm more important to you. than your cousins and i'm not up there

L: why did you tell me, then? why didn't you -

J: and say what? don't be in love? don't marry someone?

L: if it does, the i think you decide that there are people in this world who you love, and who you want to be happy, and if they find happiness which is maybe the hardest ****ing thing in the world to find then you celebrate that, with them, and try and recognize when moments are about YOU and when moments are NOT ABOUT YOU.

J: and when the wedding's over?

L: just say you need more time like we used to - that i haven't been as giving, or - things have gotten crazy planning this wedding, but when things settle down-

J: and you two go on your honeymoon? or, what, in two year, when you have a kid?

L: my sisters are my bridesmaids

J: and your cousin

L: well i don't think that's how it ends up for you

J: but if it does.

L: it feels like you're sleepwalking through all these events, and it's like, you're my best friend, i really count on you to-

J: do not.

L: ill... i'll find someone else to do the reading, you don't have to worry. you can save your money and just skip the -

J: don't be an idiot, of course i'm coming to your wedding.

L: dont go where?

J: don't call me your best friend, ok? just - don't call me that.

L: but i'm giving you the option. you can be my friend and support me, the same way that i will be your friend and support you when you get married, or you can not come

J: don't day "when you get married," it's and IF, not a WHEN, an if. 'cause there are actually a lot of really good people in this world who never find someone, and i could be one of those people. so then what? then what happens to me?

L: **** you.

J: excuse me?

L: presumably you haven't been an ******* to all of your friends and so you have friends.

J: friends with kids and husbands and mortgages and a million other priorities, who i go to visit by myself once every three months when they can squeeze me in / "uncle jordy"? that's not gonna be a happy life for me.

L: hey

J: hey

L: but if you want to bring a plus-one to the wedding, i will ind a way to-

J: i dont have a plus-one. there's no one to bring. it's fine. i spend all my weekends at bachelorette parties, and weddings, and now BABY showers, so... there wasn't time to find a plus-one even if id wanted to.

L: but you are part of that happi- a huge part -

J: i feel so excluded
