Charley is the first to rip the pages out of his book when Mr. Keating asks them to. When Mr. Keating asks them to march to the music they hear, Charley says he isn't going to participate. Charley writes the letter about the club to the school, he invites the girls to the club, he is the one that makes the "phone call from God" saying there should be girls at Welton. Charley thinks that that is what Mr. Keating wanted but Mr. Keating tells Charley that wasn't what his message was and that Charley was reckless and he ultimately gets expelled.

She was shouting, "Let me up, get that off me," but they laughed and said, "What's the matter, don't like your fish necklace?" He went to where it was and saw that it was a wooden figure of a black woman with her arm lifted out and her fist balled up. Obadiah pulled the figure out of the water. He knew the Lord had sent this figure to rescue them. He knelt down in the mud and the statue began to speak. It said, "It's all right, I'm here. I'll be taking care of you now." Obadiah brought the statue to the praise house. The next Sunday, everyone had heard about the statue and came to see it. The oldest slave told everyone that the statue was the mother of Jesus. The people danced around the statue and would touch their hands to her chest. They ended up painting a red heart on the statue so people would have a heart to touch. The master heard about the statue and he hauled her off in a wagon and chained her to the carriage house. During the night without any human help, she escaped the chains and returned to the praise house. This happened repeatedly fifty times and finally the master let her stay at the praise house.
