The brain delivers nerve signals, telling adrenaline and noradrenaline to be released by the adrenal glands. Due to these hormones, there is an increase in blood pressure, heart rate, the amount of sugar in your blood stream, and more. Cortisol helps keep some of these things elevated until you are safe. Then, it helps restore homeostasis. Cortisol is released when the hypothalamus signals the pituitary gland to produce hormones. These tell your adrenal cortex to release cortisol.
