Types of Hypoxia (ABCD)
Treatment of Hypoxia
Flying a at a lower altitude Using supplemental oxygen
C (Circulation) Stagnant Hypoxia
Occurs when blood is not flowing through the body. Can be caused by heart unable to pump blood effectively, constricted artery or excessive G's.
B (Blood) Hypemic Hypoxia
Occurs when the blood is not able to take up and transport sufficient amount of oxygen to the other cells in the body. Can be caused by anemia, CO binding to the O2 location on the blood cells, blood loss due to trauma.
D (Drugs) Histotoxic Hypoxia
Oxygen is being transported but the cells are unable to use it due to alcohol and other drugs like narcotics and poisons.
Symptoms of Hypoxia
Cyanosis (blue fingernails and lips) Headache Decreased response to stimuli and increased reaction time Impaired judgement Euphoria Visual impairment Drowsiness Lightheaded or dizzy Tingling in fingers and toes Numbness
A (Altitude) Hypoxic hypoxia
Resulf of insufficent oxygen available to the body as a whole. Examples high altitude, blocked airway and drowning.
