Biology Unit One- Independent and Dependent Variables
Independent Variable
A variable that you (the scientist) changes and you have control over. The factor being tested in an experiment.
Experimental Design
What you must determine BEFORE you conduct your experiment.
Constants
Elements of the experimental design that the scientist wants to remain unchanged.
Control Group
The control group is the group that does not experience the independent variable. It is used as a benchmark to measure any effects the independent variable had on the experimental group.
Hypothesis
A testable prediction, a trial idea about something, an educated guess. Should be in If... then... form.
Quantitative Data
Any data collected that deals with numbers.
Qualitative Data
Any data collected that involves the use of your five senses.
Dependent Variables
Factor(s) that change in response to other factors. It's what your measuring in your experiment to see whether or not the independent variable made an impact. This is what the scientist focuses their observations.
Variables
The elements in an experiment that change. Any factor, trait, or condition that can exist in differing amounts of types.
Experimental Group
This group experiences the independent variable. We compare the data we collect from this group to our control group to observe any effects the independent variable had.
