Chapter 2
Definition of bond?
A connection that atoms make with each other by sharing or transferring electrons to form larger structures, such as molecules.
Definition of state?
A physical form of matter determined by the arrangement and energy of it's particles. The trhee most common states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas.
Definition of Chemical Change?
Alters the identity of material
What is the Continuous theory? and who came up with it?
Aristotle and it says that You can keep dividing something in half and you will always have more.
Definition of Physical Change?
Does not alter the identity of the material, ex; ripping josh's shirt
Definition of matter? (an operational definition)
Matter is: - anything that occupies space and has mass -That can be sensed and measured
Definition of phase?
Matter that has distinctly different properties from other matter around it; one of the physical states of a substance in a mixture of it's different states; a separate part of a heterogeneous mixture
what is the particle theory of matter?
The concept that all matter is made of exceedingly small particles
what is the kinetic-molecular theory?
The concept that tiny particles in constant, random motion make up all mater
What is the Brownian motion?
The microscopic, random jostling of suspended matter due to the collisions of innumerable gas or liquid particles in which the matter is suspended.
Definition of physical Property?
can be observed or measured without changing the kind of matter; ex: stretching Josh's shirt.
Definition of Chemical Property?
describes how matter reacts and changes in the presence of other kinds of matter
Definition of Atom?
the basic particle of matter form which all other matter is constructed. It consists of protons, electrons, and (usually) neutrons.
Definition of diffusion?
the process of mixing by particle motion; fastest in a gas
