Listening to provide comfort to people in your life.
Appreciative listening
Listening to stimulus for purely entertainment purposes.
Information overload
Occurs when too much new information is thrown at us in too short of a time period.

Responding
The 6th stage in the listening process happens when the listener acknowledges verbally or nonverbally to the speaker.
Selecting
The first stage in the listening process when a person chooses to hear a specific message
Attending
The second stage in the listening process where you use the mental process of focusing or concentrating on specific message for a period of time.
Immediate behaviors
Verbal & nonverbal communication behaviors that create a sense of *psychological closeness*

Happens when you only process the messages that appeal to your self-interest.

Critical & evaluative listening
Purpose of judging the value or worth of the message.
Evaluating
The 4th stage in the listening process where the receiver analyzes, judges, & asses the message.
Understanding
The third stage in the listening process when you assign meaning to the message.
