Computers - CH. 9
Personal Area Network (PAN)
A LAN that consists of devices connected by Bluetooth
Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)
A network that uses Wi-Fi to transmit data
Cellular Network
A network that uses cell towers to transmit voice and data over large distances
What are the wireless network types ?
Bluetooth Personal Area Networks (PAN), Wi-Fi Wireless LANs (WLAN), and Cellular Networks
Virtual Private Network (VPN)
Creates a private network through a public network (Internet) that allows remote users to access a LAN securely and such networks use encryption to ensure data security
What do firewalls examine ?
Data packets as they enter or leave your network
Protocol
Defines the rules for communication for devices
How should individual computers on the network be protected ?
Firewalls, Antivirus, and Animalware Software
Systems on the network must be what ?
Kept up to date and secure
Modem
Most often used for dial-up Internet access and it is usually the first device on a network that connects to the Internet
What does each device need in order to connect to a network ?
Network Adapter
TCP/IP Protocol Stack
Runs on the Internet and on most LANs
Ethernet
The most commonly used standard that defines the way data is transmitted over a LAN
Client
A computer that connects to, or requests services from, another computer called a server, users log in to the network instead of their local computers, and are granted access to resources based on that login
Wireless Access Point (WAP)
A device that allows many wireless devices to join a network much like a switch
Firewall
A device that blocks unauthorized access to a network
Switch
A device that connects multiple devices on a LAN and uses address information to send data packets only to the port that the appropriate device is connected to
Router
A devices that connects two or more networks together and uses address information to route the data packets it receives to the correct locations
Server
A multiuser computer system that runs a network operating system (NOS) and provides services, such as Internet access, email, or file and print services, to client systems
Network Operating System (NOS)
A multiuser operating system that controls the software and hardware that runs on a network
Storage Area Network (SAN)
A network between the data storage devices and the servers on a network that makes the data accessible to all servers in the SAN
Domain
A network composed of a group of clients and servers under the control of one central server
Ad Hoc Network
A network created when two wireless devices connect to each other directly
Peer-to-Peer Network (P2P)
A network in which all computers are considered equal, belong to the same workgroup, each device can share its resources with every other device, and there's no centralized authority
Network Adapter
A network interface card, or communication device, used to establish a connection with a network, it may be onboard, an expansion card, or a USB device, and may be wired or wireless
Campus Area Network (CAN)
A network that consists of multiple LANs located in the same location connected to each other using routers
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
A network that covers a single geographic area
Local Area Network (LAN)
A network that has all connected devices or nodes located in the same physical location
Client-Server Network
A network that has at least one server at its center that provides centralized management, resources, and security
Wide Area Network (WAN)
A network that spans multiple locations and connects multiple LANs over dedicated lines using routers
Homegroup
A simple way to network a group of Windows computers that are all on the same home network
Bluetooth
A technology designed to connect peripherals wirelessly at short ranges
Infrastructure Wireless Network
A wireless network in which devices connect through a wireless access point
Server Software
Allows clients to communicate with the server to share resources, run applications, and send messages
Standards
Specifications that have been defined by an industry organization which ensures that equipment that is made by different companies will be able to work together
What should usernames have ?
Strong passwords that are hard to crack and each user should be granted access only to what they need
Optical Network Terminal (ONT)
The device that connects a LAN to a fiber network and it is usually the first device on a network that connects to the Internet
Workgroup
The devices in a peer-to-peer network
Topology
The physical layout of a computer network
Wardriving
The practice of driving around and locating open wireless access points
Internet Protocol (IP)
The protocol responsible for addressing and routing packets to their destination
Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)
The protocol responsible for assuring that data packets are transmitted reliably on a network
Network Resource
The software, hardware, or files shared on a network
IEEE 802.11
The standards that define the way data is transmitted over a Wi-Fi network
Computer Network
Two or more computers that share resources, such as software, hardware, or files
Piggybacking
Using an open wireless network to access the Internet without permission
