Gerund Phrase

Begins with noun form of verb ending in -ing, plus any modifiers or complements

Participial Phrase Example

Christa, *longing to go to Spain for her junior year*, worked two part-time jobs and borrowed some money from her brother.

Appositive Phrase Example

Maribeth, *her father's favorite daughter*, never recovered from the untimely death of her sister.

Infinitive Phrase

Phrases that begin with an infinitive. (to + simple form of the verb)

Infinitive Phrase Example

To shop until you drop is a silly slogan to those who don't like shopping or going to malls.

Participial Phrase

a group of words containing a participle, modifier, and pronoun or noun phrases. *Can occur at the beginning, middle, and end of sentences*

Prepositional Phrase

a modifying phrase consisting of a preposition and its object.

Appositive Phrase

redefines, renames, or modifies a noun with essential or nonessential information.

Prepositional Phrase Example

In the plains states, we hope to have spring weather *by early April.*

Gerund Phrase Example

Watching horse races at Pimlico Race Course and ball games at Camden Yards are two favorite pastimes in Baltimore.
