A specialized, and often limited operating system design to fit inside a certain type of machine. For example computers in cards, traffic lights, cash machines, POS, elevators, drinks machines etc.

A user types commands represented by short keywords or abbreviations or presses special keys on the keyboard to enter data and instructions

Operating system software that runs on a network server to provide resources to network users.

Operating systemn used on devices such as an iPhone, tablet, or Android phone

Scans and searches hard drives to prevent, detect, and remove known viruses, adware, and spyware
Local network hosted
Software distributed over a LAN such as npsri.net; two tier
Hypervisor
Software that enables a single computer to run multiple operating systems simultaneously.
Cloud hosted
Software that is installed, hosted and accessed entirely from a remote location or server; three tier
Firmware
Software that is permanently stored in a chip. The BIOS on a motherboard is an example
Locally installed software
Software which is installed on the user's computer; one-tier
cross-platform compatibility
The ability to share files or functionality across different operating systems.
File systems
The overall structure of an operating system, in which files are named, organized, and stored. FAT and NTFS are examples

Works on only one platform such as only on iPhone or only on Android
