Producer (Autotroph)

An organism that can make its own food. Most producers use photosynthesis to obtain energy from the sun. Autotroph is another word for producer and it means "self-feeder".

Decomposer

An organism that obtains energy by breaking down wastes of living things and dead organisms, and returns the broken down raw materials to the soil and water.

Consumer (Heterotroph)

An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms. Heterotroph is another word for consumer and it means "different feeder".

Omnivore

Consumers that eat plants and animals.

Carnivore

Consumers that only eat animals.

Herbivore

Consumers that only eat plants.

Trophic Level

Feeding levels in a food chain.
