Because they don't want the Indians to be educated. If they become educated they will think for themselves and they will understand what the whites are doing to them. If we did educate, we would teach the OUR ways and how "to be white"

Boers ~ the descendants of the original dutch settlers in South Africa Brought European culture. The Boers aligned with Africans against the British.

Imperialism is the expansion of a nations power over other lands. Lead to ~ Oppression, competition, build up of military, expanding of economies, warfare, racism/social Darwinism.

Spheres of influence - the area in which the imperial powers had exclusive trading rights. Russia, France, Britain, Germany and Japan. In return for money, the warlords granted these nations exclusive trading rights or railroad-building and mining privileges.

The Urban Middle Class (merchants, receiving education) Because they are educated, they can now thing for themselves. They now notice that what the elites are doing to the underprivileged is wrong.

What was the treaty of Kanagawa? Why did Japan sign it?
The treaty provided for the return of shipwrecked American sailors, the opening of two Japanese ports to Western traders, and the establishment of a U.S consulate in Japan. Under military pressure, Japan agreed to the Treaty of Kanagawa with the United States.
