I-Thou Communication
highest form, meet others in their wholeness and individuality
Interpersonal
the process of message between two individuals
eight principles
1.) we can not, not communicate 2.) interpersonal communication is irreversible 3.) interpersonal communication requires ethical choices 4.) people construct meaning 5.) meta communication affects meaning 6.) interpersonal communication develops and sustains relationships 7.) interpersonal communication is not a cure- all 8.) interpersonal communication can be learned to improve effectiveness
interactional model
Wilbur Schramm; two directions- send to receiver, receiver to sender; ongoing process; feedback(internal and external)
small group
between members of a task group with a similar goal
organizational
communication amongst a large environments with hierarchy (Ex: DCCC)
Intrapersonal
communication with ourselves (Ex: day dreaming, imaging and perceiving)
message(verbal or nonverbal), sender, receiver, channel
components that must occur during communication
field of experience
culture, past experience, history
I-It Communication
do not acknowledge humanity of other people, look at people as instruments
value
effective skill to secure goal or objective, emotional and well-being

evolves over time (feature of interpersonal communication)
transactional model
giving and receiving messages is simultaneous and mutual; cooperative( send and receiver are both responsible for effective communication)
Selective
invest risk and effort with few people, i-it level (feature of interpersonal communication)
mass
large audience through a mediated channel (Ex: television, radio, internet, newspaper)
I-You Communication
majority of interactions, do not fully engage each other as unique, small talk
public
one person giving a speech to a large audience, also referred to as public speaking
needs of hierarchy
self actualization, self esteem, love and belonging, safety and security, physiological needs
linear model
sender, message, receive & channel
Systematic
various systems, contexts that influence what happens,noise (feature of interpersonal communication)
