Ayala is making salad dressing. She mixes oil and vinegar in a blender until a smooth consistency is formed. Explain whether this is a heterogeneous or a homogeneous mixture and why.
A homogeneous mixture can only form when one of the substances can dissolve the other one. Oil and water cannot dissolve each other, so they must form a heterogeneous mixture with small particles of vinegar dispersed throughout the oil, yet not dissolved.
When fossil fuels, such as gasoline, are burned, they create smoke. Smoke is best described as a heterogeneous mixture of solid particles from the burning fuel dispersed in a gas - usually air. Smoke can be described more specifically as a suspension. What will most likely happen over time to smoke in the atmosphere?
Over time, the solid particles will settle on whatever is outside.
