Object 0f the preposition

Noun or pronoun in the prep phrase.

Indirect Object

Noun, Ponoun, or word group that sometimes appears in sentences containing direct objects. It tells TO WHOM or FOR WHOM or FOR WHAT the action of the verb is done. No I.O. without a D.O.. CANNOT be in a prep phrase.

Direct Object

Noun, pronoun or word group that tells WHO or WHAT receives the action of the verb. CANNOT be in a prep phrase.

Predicate Nominative

A word or word group that is in the predicate and that identifies the subject or refers to it. *Follows a linking verb. May be a noun, pronoun, or a word group that functions as a noun. DO NOT appear in prep phrases. Completes the meaning of a linking verb.

Predicate Adjective

Adjective that is in the predicate and that describes the subject. It completes the meaning of a linking verb.

Compound Subject

Consists of 2 or more connected subjects that have the same verb.

Complete Predicate

Consists of a verb and all the words that describe the verb and complete its meaning.The simple predicate is a part of the complete predicate.

Complete Subject

Consists of all the words that tell whom or what the sentence is about. The simple subject is a part of the complete subject.

Subject

Tells whom or what the sentence is about (CANNOT) be in a prep phrase.

Predicate

Tells you something about the subject (what it is doing, thinking, made of, etc.)

Simple Predicate

The main word (verb) or word group (helping verbs) that tells you something about the subject.

Simple Subject

The main word or word group that tells whom or what the sentence is about.
