After Joshua dies after leading the Israelites to the Promised Land, they plunge into a cycle of sin which is where the judges come in. Samuel, the last judge oversees the transition in government from judges to kings; they then choose Saul to become king but he reveals some major character flaws so they choose David; they learned the lesson that obedience leads to success

What God promises David
God promises David a son that will Build God's temple, be the Son of God, and rule over Israel forever and raise up his seed after him; seed refers to each of David's descendants

Jesus is the heir to the Davidic Covenant; he is the ultimate son of David and he will build a temple for God that will lasts forever
Greatness of David
Samuel, on a mission from God, goes to Bethlehem to look for a new king; he goes to the house of Jesse and picks out the last and youngest son and anoints him; David's greatness is politically, liturgically, eschatologically

Solomon builds a stone temple for God in Jerusalem; the ultimate Son of David is Jesus Christ that builds a temple for God that lasts forever

The name David in Hebrew means "beloved one" which indicates his esteem in the eyes of God and Israel; David is the most mentioned name in the Old Testament; chose to be king after Saul

content of the covenant concerns the promise of a son and heir and he will be David's seed who is also Abraham's seed

Davidic Covenant
he desired to build a house (temple) for the Ark of the Covenant, but the prophet Nathan tells him no, God desires to build David a house (dynasty); here God promises David a great name so he's fulfilling Abraham's promise; concerns the promise of a son and heir; given on Mt. Zion
End of Davidic Covenant
if the people obey, they receive an indirect blessing of sonship; eventually there will be a perfect Son of David and Son of God who will make divine son-ship available for everyone
David's Political Successes
means what he did for Israel as a nation; united the twelve tribes of Israel into one nation an he established Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and it remains the greatest city to this day
David's liturgical successes
means what he did for worship brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem because he wanted Jerusalem to be the heart of the nation; he also introduced music and singing into worship for the first time as he wrote psalms which referred to his sufferings and prophecies of Jesus's sufferings
David's eschatologically successes
means what he did that symbolized for the future of God's people; David foreshadowed Jesus Christ; Like Jesus, David is the "anointed one", covered with God's spirit; he was also a suffering king like Jesus for he was persecuted by his father-in-law and was later forced out of office by his son
how the Davidic covenant is a renewal of what the Israelites rejected when they were with Moses in the desert
