What were the challenges of planning Operation Overlord? What were the Allied plans for the invasion? What went wrong and why? What were the results of the initial invasion on D-Day? (150-200 words)
The challenges faced during the planning of Operation Overlord were the fortified coastal defenses and the need for supplies to be brought to the beaches. The timing of the invasion was also crucial, it had to be at low tide, on a full moon, during calm weather, and take place at dawn. The Allied plans were to stockpile resources and invade on June 6 of 1944; they also sent Airborne Divisions to arrive ahead of time and take out the heavy German artillery so that it could not be used against the Allies. The landings at Gold, Sword, Juno, and Utah went relatively smoothly, but Omaha almost ended disastrously. Many of the ships on that beach were sunk or destroyed before even arriving, and then the amphibious tanks were unsuitable as well. After hours on the defense from heavy fire, it looked like Omaha was a failure, but in the end, the troops were able to move inland, and the invasion was a success. The results of the initial invasion were that the Atlantic Wall had been breached, and the Allies now had a foothold in France; this would be the beginning of the end for the Axis powers.
