Leanness

A description of messages that carry less information due to a lack of nonverbal cues. Synchronous Communication

Disinhibition

Relational Dimension

The dimension of a message that expresses the social relationship between two or more individuals. Sentence found in: In addition to this sort of obvious content, all messages also have relational dimension. Mine: Socially, the relational dimension of the couple showed them to be very flirty.

Transactional

The dynamic process in which communicators create meaning together through interaction. Asynchronous Communication

Occurs when there's a time gap between when a message is sent and when it's received. Cognitive Complexity

Channel

Self-monitoring

The process of attending to one's behavior and using these observations to shape the way one behaves. Mine: Bill's self-monitoring of the professor made him change the way he spoke.

Richness

The quantity of nonverbal cues that accompany spoken messages. Sentence found in: Social scientists use the term richness to describe the abundance of nonverbal cues that add clarity to a verbal message. Mine: The richness of the conversation made Jim use his hands a lot.
