Why did it take so long for an active civil rights movement to begin in the LGBT community?

LGBT rights are seen as a sensitive topic. It has the idea of "if we don't talk about it, it won't happen." If a person's religious beliefs conflict with the law or lead to bias against other groups, should the government protect the exercise of those beliefs? Why or why not?

I do not think the government should protect these practices if they conflict with the law or lead a bias. It is not right to discriminate or take action against a group because they are "against your beliefs." Religion should not be a scapegoat for just being a piece of crap and prejudiced person. Like with homosexuality, it is not right to discriminate against them just because they found love in a different form than you.
