Imperialism-

stronger nations (U.S.) dominate weaker nations economically (money), politically (government), culturally (beliefs and customs) and militarily (protection/defense).

U.S. begins to annex land.

{annex- to join a new territory with existing land (U.S.)}American attitude changes and more Americans agree to continue American involvement in international affairs.

Imperialism grows:

1.Economic reasons- needed new markers to sell manufactured goods and farm products (ham/wheat and coal/copper ) 2. Nationalism- pride and devotion to ones country. U.S. becomes a world power. 3.Europe's growing navies required more naval bases to be set up. U.S. needs protection so they set up bases in Pacific and Caribbean. U.S. develops Great White Fleet (2nd largest in the world) 4. Humanitarian/Religious- spread Christianity and the American way of life (medicine, hygiene, law abiding citizens)

US and the World:

After the Civil War, many believed that the USA withdraw from world affairs and concentrate on its own business. Stating out of world affairs or when one country secludes itself from others is known as Isolationism. However, other saw that the US was producing so many goods that it must look overseas for other markets. This is known as Expansionism.

4.Hawaii

American owned land with sugar cane and pineapple plantations. Hawaii sold sugar duty/tax free to the U.S. and leased Pearl Harbor (naval base) to the U.S. as a fueling and repair station. -Queen Liliuokalani gains control of the island and opposed U.S. control of islands. Queen Lili was overthrown by the help of U.S. Marines. -Under President William McKinley, Hawaii was annexed. U.S. needed naval bases (Pearl Harbor) here.

2.Pacific

American shows interest in the Pacific. Commodore Matthew Perry convinced Japan to open trade with the U.S. By 1860, trade was open with China.

1.Alaska

Sec of State Seward buys Alaska for 7.2 million dollars from Russian in 1867. This was known as Seward's Folly (mistakes) - Americans joked that Alaska was "walrus covered iceberg", barren and worthless because you could not farm on it.-Seward purchases it for 7.2 million dollars- less than 2 cents acre. People later discovered that Alaska has oil and gold.
