pernicious anemia

Vitamin B12 deficiency. It can cause a burning, painful tongue.

black hairy tongue

A condition where the filiform papillae become elongated and stained, giving a dark, "hairy" appearance.

fissured tongue

A condition where the tongue develops deep grooves or fissures on its surface.

geographic tongue

A condition with map-like, smooth, red patches on the tongue that can move locations over time.

glossitis

A general term for inflammation and changes in the topography of the tongue.
